This is what happened to our hire car in Cyprus. We were driving along the motorway at 65-70mph (speed limit is 65mph) and all of a sudden there was a juddering coming through the steering wheel, so I backed off to about 55mph and then a BANG! the tyre, I thought the suspension had collapsed the car was all over the road. I managed to get the car to the hard shoulder. I was quite realived after seeing that it was the tyre that had exploded and nothing else. So I proceded to take the wheel off and put the spare on, the only problem being that the spare was an old rusty thing from a different car. So we had to drive for about 5 miles along the hard shoulder to a garage.
To add insult to injury, on the way back to the apartment I was pulled for speeding, I was doing a massive 121kmh (70-75ish) the officer let us off as I said that we were going home the next day.

why when nothing happened he wasnt injured etc? compo for what...having to change a tyre?

Car was hired from Avis. Wrote to them when I got back and recieved 1/2 the cost back, which is more than I was expecting
