Same as, seen some guy giving it all the large (my first Pod day with POTN lot). My cars well quick etc, and he launched off in reverse, yes we all laughed 
I hold my revs as well between 3-3500k, just using the handbrake and the clutch to get me onto the startline, then once those lights go green, sliiide the clutch up to about 5k, let it rev up to 7k in 1st, then into 2nd, up to about 6500rpm, and up through the gears changing at 6500rpm.
AS for thrashing a cold engine, err, personnally, i wouldn't. Actually gives less power when its cold. Engine should be warm, but have the bonnet open until you are ready to go onto the startline.
But, end of the day, you should be able to do a few runs, try different launch styles and see what goes best with your car. ALl cars will launch differently
