It's the secondary air pump, EGR is different.

No it doesn't, it pump air in to the exhaust on start up to dilute it, so it makes the start up emissions look better because fresh air is being pumped in.

It's at the back of the engine on the inlet manifold right hand side, just next ot the throttle body. About the size of a narrow can of baked beans.

The EGr system reintorduces exhaust gases in to the inlet to reduce "harmful" nitrogen oxides, it improves emissions again. you can remove it but I wouldn't bother you won't gain anything from it. well a flashing ecu light.

The pump no you don't, the EGR yes you do.
blocked off? with what, carbon?? normally there are the veins inside which spread from the central hole to each port, it's the lump right in the middle of the port with little hole in it.

on my old manifold(standard one)the were fine bits of metal along the edge od the holes so it was blocked off from the actual exhaust bit. not connected, similar to this, dunno if you can see what i mean but both my supersprint and standard had these

Yeah, that right, the air doesn't move ip in to the manifold because the pressure to over come in the exhaust is too much. If you look in the head the port have a bump on the bottom. in the middle of the bump there is a hole. this goes al the way through and comes out just before the valves, as the gases flow out the chamber they are high speed so they hit the top of the portleaving a low pressure region at the base. and it's easier to pump in the air there.
I'll do a diagram to explain myself now.
