Arsenal appear to have accepted defeat in their bid to keep club captain Patrick Vieira.

According to a radio report in Spain, Real Madrid have agreed a fee with the Gunners for the signature of the London club's French international midfielder.

Cadena SER radio station reported that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Arsenal vice-president David Dein have agreed a 35 million euro (£23.1million) fee for Vieira, who is expected to sign a four or five-year deal if the transfer goes through.

However, the report said that Arsenal had asked for a few days to line up a replacement - thought to be Porto midfielder Maniche.

Prisa, the media group that owns Diario AS and Cadena SER, has an investment in Real Madrid TV and is thought to be close to the Bernabeu outfit.

Vieira has been the subject of transfer speculation linking him with Real Madrid for most of the summer.

The 28-year-old has not commented on the subject but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger stated at the weekend that he believes the player will stay at Highbury.

There were reports last week that Arsenal representatives, including vice chairman Dein, were meeting with officials from Real but these were denied by the club. Similarly Real also played down reports quoting club sources expressing their interest in the player.

Wenger brought former Cannes player Vieira to Arsenal for £3.5million from AC Milan eight years ago.

He has since matured into one of the best midfielders in the world and is an obvious target for Real as they rebuild after last season's disappointing campaign

Be well pleased when he's gone (chelsea fan here)

BUT

He won't suit Real's football, they are a fast team from back to front !

Oh well we shall see

Well our only excuse would be that our players haven't had time to gel BUT i have good faith this year, we really look hot so far in pre-season !

Nath - Whats your hopes on Luton this year ? Southend look good this term aswell, signed Bristol Rovers captain, signed Gray from Wimbldeon (used to run 100m for England) Andy Edwards has returned from Peterborough as has Spencer Prior !

We look hot

He's not worth alot, nobody goes for silly money these days. Becks only cost £20 mil and hes better than Vieira (or was when he was in England anyway)

Greg - I'm hoping Play offs this year but we havent been too busy in the transfer market so i'm not too sure whats gonna happen.

The main man to look out for this year i reckon wil be "Robben" Looks wicked !

Kezman & Drogba will be interesting aswell

Birmingham will be good this year got some great new players as have Boro even if they are all over 32 !

Pompy are really gonna struggle im afraid, they must keep Yakubu !

I dont think Vieira will leave and if he does we've gotta replace him with someone as good or better (not that there's many players better) and £23 million is about right remember he is 28 now!

I think Chelsea will be better this year with Drogba/Kezman/Robben etc but altho a gooner fan I do think Arsenal will win it again due to the fact the players are more 'gelled' than other teams But I think Lampard will 'shine' this season as will Robben
