Hey, I found a Nokia 6100, YES I tried to get it back to its previous owner, but it had no simcard, and no entries in the phone book, other than a couple of scratches it seems brand new. So I take it home and stick my SIM in, it must be either unlocked or previously on O2 because it started working.
A few days later I cannot get a signal at all, and then after turnin off and on again, i get the message "Sim card registration faild".
Apparently this means that the phone has been reported lost/stolen and the phone has been put on a blacklist deeming it unusable by all of the networks. So I look into it and apparently you can change the IMEI number to allow it to be used again. Anyone know how or where I can get this done?

min penalty for changing an imei is 6yrs
if you are caught with it you may be charged for handling stolen goods
if it were me i'd take it to your local police station. then if the person who lost it sid it had been nicked they will get in muchos deep shit

Just phone the network that it's on and tell them to tell the owner which police station you dropped it off at.

yea you can, its fairly easy to do  but like said, if caught you will get bummed in jail

im not too sure tbh, but im sure if you did it the once off then i doubt anything will happen - although i have a feeling that every IMEI number is matched to a make/model of phone, so they can tell that way

Last time I got SIM card registration failed it was cause I hadn't made a call for like 5 months (an old phone). New SIM card solved that one.

Certain digits in the IMEI signify the model - like the 7th and 8th digits or something like that e.g. 15=Nokia x-model.

Right, seems to be some confusion as to what is and isnt possible.
Right, the 6100 is a new series of nokia phones. They are classed as DCT4. Now, when nokia released DCT4 handsets they decided to change the protection to how the IMEI number is stored. There are two IMEI numbers, the one stored in the Flash (the one shown when you type *#06#) and the one stored in the UEM (the actual IMEI number of the phone that gets transmitted when a call / text is made/recieved). Now the UEM is OTP = One Time Programmable to stop people simply rewriting it like it was possible to do in older nokias. So the theory goes, the only way to change the IMEI is to change the UEM, re-write the information to the UEM and then update the Flash with the IMEI.
Also the 6100 has an underfilled BGA with a load of nasty glue around the chip making removal of it safely near impossible without ripping the pads from the PCB then the phone would become a nice handy paper weight.
Also note that IMEI changing is illegal unless authorisation has been granted from the phone manufactuer.
Also you may find that if you give it to someone or sell it to them and they decide to take it to the police you may end up in the sh*t for handling and recieving stolen goods etc etc.

OK lol, ill take it to the piggies. If noone claims it after so long, do I get it? If so do you reckon Nokia would change the IMEI for me?

So the DCT4 have the IMEI in a UEM which is OTP in the BGA on the PCB?
