I think the sport started going downhill in 1999 personally, the affects are just starting to become visible though.

not the same as it used to be. Lifeless i rarely watch it anymore. Used to watch it every sunday! Stopped watching it religeously in 2001 IIRC

yeh i was just reading this as well!
The new LOLA championship has been slated by all but i think it will provide much closer racing and some real stars will shine through.
Seat leon championship and the classic toruing cars are the best events in uk motorsport these days!
I think that they wont pull out like all the teams as sponsorship and tv rights plays a huge part in the runing of a company.
F1 to GT is a huge gap in the teams budgets
bring the DTM to the uk thats what we need!

Ive always loved formula 1 - i even knew the teams and cars when i was 5 years old because my dad was such an avid fan.
I think the sport has too many restrictions. Make the cars faster and put turbos with cockpit adjustable boost on them again so overtaking becomes more of a possibilty and more exciting (anyone remember the mid 80's when the boost was increased for overtaking along with a puff of smoke and burst of speed!)
Thats what the sport is missing.
My fave series at the minute is the Australian V8 Supercars - so much better than the BTCC.

I did for a few months as he was ma favourtist.
But then i decided to carry on supporting mclarens and decided to support hakkinen. And did till he left 
Now im kimi fan, but tbh i have hardly watched the last season!

BTCC used to be wicked, but same thing too many rules and regs now its staid and almost boring compared to the days of Tm harvey/steve soper/alain menu etc etc, when ppl could barge you off the road!

Yep i agree, V8 supercars is the best racing series in the world. And possibly where my future will be made.
F1 needs more teams, lower budgets and ecclestone to stop being a greedy bastard and let the uk have more races and award teams fairer.
Like the BTCC, if you win the race the event before you start back of the grid for the next race, and the more postitions you gain the more points you get!
That way overtaking will become more often, its too much follow the leader and team instructions these days!

Plato, Cleland and Radisich were racing last year in the V8 Supercars - Radisich is still in this season.....

in all fairness the btcc has become better in the last year or 2, nothing like the late 80's and 90's even when bmw, audi, volvo etc ran they were ace days. But the idea of weight and the one shot showdown lap etc is good idea, just suppliers do not invest enough,
Studying motorsport at uni we get invitations and have to case study all forms of the topic.
DTM has big budgets as everyone loves it and drivers want to race in the championship, same with v8 supercars, even though there budgets are nearly half of DTM, the racing is better.
Look at the 2004 leon championship, as there was a btcc drive up for grabs it made everyone go hell for leather, made it more fun and exciting.
Ferrari get given far too much by ecclestone each win, the other teams loose out and the gap gets larger.
The only team capable of geting close this year will be BAR, and i think jensen will be challenging schumacher and barichello a lot more than they wish!
No f1 team has a superb car, they all excel at one thing, mclaren has the best aero package on the gird, williams and bar both have good engines and suspension set ups and ferrari have nothing ace, they just have a good average package that works day in day out.

Looking at Ferraris success over the last few years though, if i was looking to invest in a team, id invest in Ferrari. Even though i like the other teams much more - Ferrari are a sure shot to win again, if it was about the money, ferrari is where its at unfortunately.

yep mainly because of the huge amounts the team gets for a win, if they balanced that out that the winners had to share a fund with other lower placed teams then they could invest into aero, engines etc etc and become more upto date and advanced, there is just such a huge gap between the teams these days!

and the one person that can sort that wont, as he will fall out with ferrari, unless someone comes in with a spectacular budget ferrari will win year after year.
2 years ago schumacher drove another f1 car, we wasnt allowed to know as was out of his contract. he was considerably slower that the driver that actually drives the car for the team.
Also race of champions, schumacher got raped twice by the finnish young rally star Kovalanen.
If anyone gets the chance go watch the classic f1 and toruing car events run by the brdc.
Brillaint old willaims cars etc battling it, youd think they take it easy but oo no they sure go for it, same with historic touring cars!
Old mk1 escorts, bmws, alfas its great day out, no huge crowds and fun to see all the old cars!

I've always thought the Seat Leon championship was about which rich kid could throw the biggest paddy in the pit lane. Maybe I'm watching the dramatised coverage.

the coverage on tele just shows as ian said the rich kids!
But never the less the racing is spot on.
F1 is the largest spectated sport worldwide TV wise.
A friend of mine races FF1600, came 3 at the brands hatch festival, 4th in the walter hayes trophy and only got 6 races in the season! all 6 were in the top 10!
Lots of teams have approached him, but they all demand at least 10k upfront. Hrad when his parents remortgaged there house to pay for his racing and he is at uni!
Its the money that makes the drivers

yeh sure is! I talk about this 5 days a week at uni, and have to study teams and series'!
Plus it will be profession so need to know what to happen in years to come!

i think they should take away all the electronic aids in a F1 car and remove the mirrors, and add random jumps in the track, and give everybody machine guns on the car. probably wouldnt get anymore overtaking but id watch it

they should have parking spaces and have to parallel park, a lap in reverse, a drift lap, would be fun to watch!
