Need a new fuel tank apparently as the one on my car was damaged somehow and has a minor leak. They said a new fuel tank would cost me £600! I told them I would get back to them as they wouldn't fit one from a breakers yard. I go check on SEL imperials website to see how much a fuel tank on there costs........ £98. I wonder who I will be buying the tank off. The annoying thing is I cannot take the car anywhere other than another MOT test station as an MOT failure has been issued

I could change the bloody tank in about an hour

I will phone them back and ask them why they are charging £600 for a tank. It's two bloody pieces of steel pressed into shape, then pressed together. It's a bit more complicated than that but you get the idea...

I presume they do it as a "kit" which includes a pump, sender unit and a bit of pipework.

If they say I need a new pump for whatever reason I conveniently have a spare SPI pump at home...

I dont see why you cant do it yourself. Theres nothing in MoT to say you cant work on your own car

There is now, if it fails on something the problems have to be fixed on the premises by the garage. If you take it away its technically not taxed and insured, and you will have to pay for a re-test then too

Mine was driven back when it failed so I could adjust the headlight beam while they waited for my new trackrod ends to come. Although it's previous MOT hadn't expired, so that's probably why it was fine. Retest was still free.

Yea, this is exactly the point... I cannot see how a fuel tank can cost so much money... I'm going to call them back tomorrow with a quote from another garage to supply and fit a tank and also the price of a tank from SEL imperial. I know that SEL don't sell genuine parts, but this is beyond a joke for genuine parts to be honest.

This is because this is a 'dangerous' failure... I can drive it to another test station for a re-test though...

There is nothing to say you cant diy. If they will let you drive it elsewhere they will let you drive it home.

If you cant drive it away they cannot stop you towing it away.

Yea, they said they filled in a form of some sorts to say it's failed... Everything has or is changing when it comes to MOT's... The biggest problem is I live 98 miles away from the garage it's at. If I could fit the tank at uni then I would just drive it back down the road, do the work and take it back...

Retests havent changed (although more people are charging for them now)
Who can do the work hasnt changed.
Legalities concerning mot insurance tax etc havent changed

Technically by driving away you could be done for driving an unroadworthy car but if you had been stopped on the way there you could have been stopped for driving an unroadworthy car!

sounds a crap garage to me!
I work at a vauxhall dealership
we would be happy to fit non gen parts
we even souce prices for customers on genuine and say a part from motor factors etc
then its thier choice
even fit parts from scrap yards as some astra diesel we have had in as breakdowns have needed new diesel pumps which cost near 2k from vauxhall
so naturally the customer sources a salvage one and we fit it
job done

you are allowed to drive the car to a point of testing only i believe

If its moted you can technically drive it anywhere.

If its not moted you can drive it anywhere where by previous arrangement it is going to have repairs carried out or a test carried out.

Either way you can be done for driving an unroadworthy vehic\le if you piss the copper off enough!
