Ive been working for volvo truck and bus for 5 years now.

Started out as an apprentice technician, passed all my exams etc with grades distinction distinction. i then completed all 8 modules of the volvo training.

i was then asked if i wanted to do the volvo master technician course as they need 2 people from our depot trained as master techs. i agreed to do this and got 100% in both tests and practical assesments.

im currently still being paid as a 3rd year apprentice, there is another guy i work with who started as a steam cleaner (no qualifications at all). As we do less steam cleans than when he started, he is now being trained in house as a mechanic.

ive been having on going talk with my manager for a rise, yet i keep getting told to hold on it will be sorted.

ive finally been told my new rate will begin on march 26th, and i will paid as a grade 3 technician. yet the guy who has no qualifications is already being paid as a grade 3.

volvo has grade 3, 2 and 1 (1 being as far as im aware master technician status, which only 2 of us have, yet everyone except 3 of us is paid this rate)

Am i right to have complained that i belive i am worth more, as i have done all possible training??

all i get of my manager is, your only 21 you have a lot 2 learn still, even tho any major electrical/diagnosis problem that comes in comes straight to me, as im the only one on my shift that knows really what im doing with these problems.

its really pissing me off, i love working there yet i feel if iwas to leave and join a new company, with the grades etc i have id be classed as a top flight technician, not a basic service monkey.

rant over

Look for other jobs.

Find out what you could be getting paid.

Take this information to your boss and if he doesn't give you a raise go elsewhere.

Depends if you could attract the same elsewhere. If so, line something up and tell them.

it depends on the job they are offering you

you get paid for the job you get in, not for your qualifications

Yes, get in talks with another firm, get them to the point where they offer you something. If Volvo let you go, result, new job, more money.

If Volvo shit themselves, result, same job, more money However your loyalty will be in question for a while but they will soon forget all about that

Depends how you want to play it. The most effective stance is to look at other jobs. You could log down every time someone asks you for something but this may still not get you anywhere if whoever decides the money has made their mind up.

i need to find a copy of the criteria for being a grade 3, grade 2 and grade 1. if it says that u have to have x amount of experience, then yea id accept that, but i dont think it will, surely its age discrimination?

Best way to go about asking for more money from your current employer is to have another job on the table if there not playing ball!!

Ive seen it done several times, someone hands in their resignation, called into the office then come out the office 30mins later grinning like a cheshire cat...of course they were leaving!

Thats what smart people do!!!

If they say 'your only 21' yet you have the qualifications & are doing the work then yes I would say that is age discrimination!! Flash that at them next time your in talks. Remind them you do want to work for them...but your not stupid!!

i dont think it would work, were a bit over staffed as it is, only thing i have in my favour is they spent at least 15-20k on me in 5 years, but they have let a few knowledgable people go without trying to keep them

Might be a good start. Should be able to get hold of it either off the Regional manager (when he asks why you want it you explain to him why your interested in it), or through your HR department.

Sounds like your manager is holding back your pay for whatever reasons, which is quite sad really . IMO length of experience plays a very small part of it, when compared to what you've gained from the experience .

You need to prove to your manager why you are worth more..

Arrange a meeting, prepare yourself. Go in with all the training you've done, your results, qualifications, but also look around for other jobs and the pay for those jobs.

I.e, newspaper job offers, showing page and required qualifications.

Remember, an employer won't pay more than they need to. If you can prove to them why you should be paid more (and no better way than providing other jobs pay) then you have a good argument.

If they still arn't interested, then look elsewhere.

One thing, its not allowed to discuss pay with other employees, so matter what anyone else is on in the firm, you cannot compare your wages to them.

Also, when you go for the meeting, discuss it in a way that you want to stay with them, but feel you should be paid more for what you do. DON'T go in there with the almighty i want more more more attitude and if you dont give it im buggering off, as they will just let you go. Your putting them on the back foot and no manager will like that at all and you will shoot yourself in the foot.

Also, length of experience means a lot.
It sounds to me like they are giving you good training, i wouldn't knock it too much.

Oh, and money isn't everything, remember your still young, you have lots of time to climb the ladder and learn a lot more, but you are still young and try not to get too ahead of yourself.
