My engine management light has been on for a long long time now. It still passed it's MOT, two months ago. I just want to make sure I will be doing this correct and hopefully it will work (T reg 1999).
Bellow is a picture of the diagnostics plug:

I connect 5 and 6 together using a paper clip (or anything metal) and turn my ignition on. Then read the number of flashes? (I'll try and record this).
Can someone confirm this is what to do?
Thanks,
Steven

I have done, I just want to make sure what I've written above it correct. The quicker the better, so I can get on with it.
Does the engine need to be running or will the ignition being on do?

Thanks, I'll go do it now. I'll record it so if I need a second opinion, someone may be kind enough to help
Thanks.

That makes sense. Just tried it 4 times and no flashes. Thanks Dave and Vaux Lad.

Actually, it should be 1-8 from bottom to top, not top to bottom. Like this?

If that's right, I don't have a connector in 6? :S
Eidt: 5 bottom, 6 top - Wrote 6 twice by mistake.

I tried that, nothing worked. That made me think it was 5/6 from the bottom. I shall try again.

5/6 from top both have pins in...

you could just be unfortunate and have a later-spec ECU which doesn't allow reading fault codes with a paperclip...

Aye, as above.
1999 car might not let it.

I think so, I just tried it with a Kirby Grip as well and it didn't work. Is there anyway to check that it wont work and that mine is the later model? (without the light not flashing).

thats pretty much the only way, if when shorting the pins & you get no flashing EML light, afraid its a job for an OBDII reader or Tech2...

Dam, well I'm not going to pay £50 for someone to tell me what's wrong with it. It seems to be running ok and has been since it's been on.
Why did Vauxhall not allow the fault code to be read!

they were loosing money to partners
5p for a paperclip, or £45+VAT for a diagnosis...
tbh check on Mig or VXON, there may be someone local to you who has access to a reader of some kind at a much better price

Would putting it on the machine also tell me why my handbrake light is on? (I doubt it would, but thought I would ask.)

handbrake light could just be the switch on the handbrake handle tbh, easy enough to sort out there will be a brown/white wire going down beside it to the lower part of the handle, thats attached to the switch
