VW Golf GTi 1.8 20v turbo

Anyone had one of these? Oppinions?

I have now sold my Corsa GSi Was loads of fun, but im travelling quite a bit further to work now and want something nicer and more comfy, guess im growing up.

Also just got my claim money through! When last feb someone decided to smash into the side of me and write off my corsa 1.4 sport, they finally accepted 100% responsibility after the insurance company finally found the pictures of the incident showing exactly what happened that i had taken, the badger was trying to say it was my fault! Anyways they finally took liability and i got my money. Big tip if ever you are involved in a crash, take pictures and lots of them as soon as you can before they other person tries to move thier car out of the way!

Soo i was looking at moving to the VAG side for my next car, im 19 soon and will have 1 year ncb soon too so hopefully the insurance will be nice on me looking for a 1.8t.

Im still just researching them now so any other ideas for an alternative car for around £4,000 to £5,000 let me know!

Cheers,
Alex

Insurance was not too much of a problem at 18 on a corsa GSi with 0ncb, or are we talking really high?

Thanks for the reply, ill jump over to parkers price guide now and see what sort of insurance group they are in.

Thanks! That looks spot on. I have been driving the same! 1 year experiance, 1 year ncb and 19 y/o soon enough. £900 is quality. Have been looking at the a3s too. Good prices on them!

Anyone owned an a3 1.8 Turbo or a golf 1.8 Turbo ?

That sounds about right, i was paying around that on the corsa GSi with 0ncb and being 18. So 1.8 T should be ok.

Just need to find someone who has had this model so i know what too look for an what they are like. After a nice looking car with smooth power and a nice noise.

Audi A3 1.8 T would be spot on for me. Just wonering about prices for a nice one, things took look out for in regards to the engine and so on (never owned a turbo car before) so things like petrol usage?

They nice and smooth to drive? Im not expecting it to be rapidly fast but thats not what im after at the moment, may get it remapped in the future.

Basically i just want someone who has had one to let me know its a good idea! lol

My mate had a leon 1.8turbo and it was great on fuel.

my step mum has worked for audi and vw, and the most comman fault is the clutchs and gearboxes on the golf and sometimes electrics can go on strike.

hope this helps

After owning the A3 T and driving the golf i'd say the golf is a lot comfier and feels more solid.

Mine was V reg and the golf was a 51 plate so not sure if that will make a lot of difference.

Try a nice beemer maybe??

Have a look on www.uk-mkivs.net. lots of info about them on there and some very tidy ones on there too.

The engines before 2002 (i think) came with a ko3 turbo and the ones after came with a ko3s turbo which can reach higer figures than the previous with a remap alone. There are also two outputs as standard 150bhp for the early ones and then 180bhp for the later ones which were produced after the 25th anni edition.

They are not amaznigly quick as standard but there is alot of tuning potential and if done right they can look really nice!

I may be converting to a golf sometime soon finances allowing

The 1800T 20v are very nice engines.
Up to around 200bhp(from 150) just with a remap/more boost.

Can get them to 300ish on standard internals with a bigger turbo.

i have a pissrat...altho not a golf..it has the 150 bhp tubby engine!

I love it, nice snd quiet, refined, but pretty potent when u give it some.

as said a remap will take it to near 200bhp, which isnt bad for £300 and puts no extra strain on the engine.

My passat is only £890 a year to insure. at 20 with 1yrs ncb and an sp30!
