I'm fed up with my car once again. Currently driving round like my grandad, trying to not rev over 3k, Gentle driving, the way your taught...And my current fuel consumption is 23.6mpg...

You wouldn't believe how annoying it is to get on a dual carriage way and not overtake !

Whats the best way to drive to get maximum fuel efficiency ?

I realize driving gentle etc, however to get the most from a tank, should you be watching revs etc ? If not, any bright idea's why I'm getting such poor performance ?

Thanks Y'all

I drove 440 miles yesterday, from Swansea to Stevenage and back.

Left Swansea at 7am, and then left Stevenage at 6 pm, so drove at very busy times of day.

Averaged around 85 on the motorway (apart from traffic jams) and got an average of 37.6 mpg.

In a 1.6 Sport btw, revving at around 4000-4500 rpm.

And like i said i'm driving like an 80yr old, moving through the gears fairly quickly, and driving round in 4th everywhere at 30 !

2 Weekends back i drove 600 miles (give or take) and it drank 3 full tanks, all motorway driving, and that worked out at 25.9mpg (and that was with the car stripped out)

i have a 1.2 8v.... and when i really need to save fuel i use 4th and 5th gears for speeds over 50km/h. then again you'd be driving like an 80year old. try to use 5th gear. in these engines its hard to save fuel due to lack of power. you will find that if you had a 1.4, it would consume less.

I had three other people in mine.

Probably used just over 1 tank in total, used just about 53 litres IIRC, and a tankful is 45 litres.

Not always the case tbh. Using 5th at really low revs may use more petrol as the engine has to work harder to go. I was always told that between 2 and 3,000 rpm is the best rev range for fuel consumption.

thats what i've been doing, driving at 30 in 4th, which is about 2100 ish, then dropping to 3rd if i need to accelerate to avoid someone or whatever (however not had to do so yet)

Annoyingly the engines done 83k, yet is 15 years old and still, to my knowledge, in bloody good nick.

The thing that is annoying me most, is that becuase i'm paying so much for petrol, i cant really save enough for a new car...isn't life shite at times !

And yes, its completely standard !

My 1.2 8v was just as shocking on petrol tbh. I think it's the old design/technology. Incidentally my XE is better on petrol

Yea, the most I ever got out of my 1.2 8v was about 30 mpg, and norally got about 25.

Its mainly due to having to boot it everywhere just to keep up with normal traffic

Would stuff like changing sparks, leads and such, new filter and things like that help, or would it be like throwing money at a dead horse ?

I wasnt too bothered as petrol that end is cheap in comparison

In my 1.2 8v, the most I ever got was 250 to a tank - shocking tbh, as I said I regularly get 350 in my 1.6 now.

Fair enough. My 12v will do atleast 350 miles to 1 tank. And that isn't even really on the red, or one continuous run.

At the rate the current tank is going, i'm on course for 182 miles.... How fantastic

23.6 from a 1.2 8v is not right at all mate. I've just calculated mine and it's roughly 24 on average, and thats a 2,7 V6 twin turbo!
