My mate was stopped in his fiesta last night because of his exhaust. Its not even loud, just an ashley backbox, yet he was stopped for it, and told that as its not standard, its therfore illegal.
He had a JUST bald tire too, and they gave him 3 points & a £30 fine.
Now the police here are utter bastards at the best of times, surly the exhaust thing isnt right? He got the note thing to have it changed in 14 days.

Of course it isn't illegal, unless he doesn't have a cat, in which case, it would be.
But if it is declared on his insurance, then no, can't see how it's illegal.

Take it to an MOT station and get it noise tested, but should be fine I think.

If an exhaust has been altered from standard spec then its illigal going by the law

that doesnt make sense. Why would insurance companies cover exhausts if they are illegal?

We had a car in work on Saturday, this old dears exhaust had rotted off cat-back, i thought it was stupidly loud but my boss did a decibels test and it was quite far under the limit. So unless your mates exhaust its unbarable to stand next to i very much doubt its illegal.

Good point also why are places aloud to sell them
But its been brought up on many forums about exhausts and that is the law and at the end off the day if they say its illigal then theres not much you can do about it

happens all the time up here robin,
they go out with the test equipment and catch several cars a night,
there's no law though, no noise limit, or anything, so they're charging you with something that doesnt exist
it a stupid thing to do, and i dont know any1 who has removed they're exhaust,
what they dont tell you is, that vibrations from the exhausts they test mean the machine needs to be re-calibrated everytime they use it, which it never is, as ive seen them do 6/7 cars in one car park one after the other
police can be badgers at times

He doesnt mean that. He means if the car has a Db rating of 80 for example with standard exhaust, and he put a back box on it, which is modifiying that exhaust, then it will be louder, therefore not being how that exhaust come out of the factory.
But, if he put an aftermarket exhaust (full system) and it has a rating of 90Db it will be ok, because it is made that way!

tbh the thing that p*sses me off is that places are aloud to sell them
and the fact i pay more insurance for having an aftermarket exhaust but yet the police still say it is illigal
