I'd buy based on the car I wanted, if the diesel engine was the best one i'd get that and vice versa for petrol.

nope, especially not with modern day diesels engine development, remember the development has had alot less years spent on it that petrol so they may get even better.

It was only a year ago when someone suggested a diesel for my next car and I nearly slapped them... now its all changed. The drive of a derv is much more comfortable and smooth without muc effort required by the driver. I've had a number of petrol cars and they all required a level of control on the gas. A derv is more forgiving...
The diesel comes into it own when your on a motorway crusing in 6th gear
I dont think I'll ever go back to petrol as I can see the next generation of diesels being even better than whats around now.
Most manufactures are offering a derv equivalent... i'm properly after a Audi A4 as my next car and will go definitely go for the derv option over the petrol version!

I replaced the diesel 306 with the petrol Laguna.
The fact that the diesel model costs more, combined with the 5p per litre extra meant that I'd have to drive it a while for it to make it back.
The Laguna's not really any thirstier anyway.

Next car will be petrol deffo, I only went diesel due to drastic change in the miles I do & its going to go the other way in 12 months. Basically from 600 miles a week to pleasure miles only (no commuting) & only 3 weeks from every 5...minimal miles. Back to petrol asap!
Hopefully something fast & thirsty too

I drive my Mums diesel 307 and my petrol 307. Prefer my petrol version tbh.
Seems to have a bit of turbo lag on my mums. Foot down and the wheels don't sping but then spin a few seconds later. It's the same on the company van though.
My miles are not going to change for a while yet. Probably 2 years or so when i either move jobs or move closer to work. If things carry on the way they are then i'll be moving closer to work.
I don't mind diesels, think i'll be getting one next time. Either way i'll be traveling to work or back to see my family.

Petrols spin if you give it to many revs and release the clutch too quick. Diesels i have drove spin after the clutch is fully released.

I can't - I had a 525i when car was being repaired and it really did hit home how much more MPG you get from the derv
God knows how I ran the TT for so long

6th at 85 is nice too

Not for a daily driver. Diesel is the way forwards for general cruising.
