right mate was gonna buy my car off me for £1,500. he gave me half, then lost his job

eventually he said he couldnt be bothered with buying it anymore, and that i could just keep the money i offered to pay it all back, but he insisted. a couple of weeks later he was broke so asked for a bit back, so i gave him £250. he said thats all he wants, keep the rest for definite its now been over a year and he still aint got a decent job and said he wants the rest back. the money is long gone by now...

i was a little annoyed as i said i did offer it all back in the first place, and i cant afford to just splash out hundreds of pounds whenever he "needs" it. i was gonna say i get paid next week so would give him £100 to be getting on with... but hes basically just called me a cunt and gone offline.

what would you do? am i cunt? is he out of order?

shall i pay him it all back?

It's a bit wrong to keep it, but it's wrong of him to just ask for it & expect you to come up with it instantly

Do him a deal, say you'll give him it...once he gets a job

I'd have avoided this in the first place by giving the money back regardless of him insisting. Nothing worse than falling out over money. However now you have had it over a year he's had more than enough time to get a decent job. We talking like £500 left?. If he couldn't make up £500 in a year then that's a bit poor. I'd offer him a bit more than £100 but not sure about the full amount.

no i still have the car. its not the fact of really paying him back so much as that it would take me a long time, as giving him £500 now would render me absolutely broke

I would have given the money back at the time, even if it meant putting it through his door, then I wouldn't be in this situation now.

it does seem abit wrong to keep it but if he insisted on keeping it in the first place then he kind of has no right to ask for it back, even if times are hard for him!

id mention the fact you offered it him back in whole but he refused

I agree with that 100%

What was the bloke thinking when he didn't want the money back in the first place? It might have been polite, but if he didn't get the car what was the point of parting with the £££?

Do a deal over a few months....that would seem the best way forward for both parties

That doesnt exactly help him now though does it

TBH mate your best saying you'll give it back but cant afford to do it all at once, and then just take the piss and give him £100 a month or something.

If he really is a mate he should understand that you can't be expected just to come up with the lot like that.

Like Cosmo, I'd offer to pay it back, but only like £75/£100 a month - he should understand, if not tell him he's a cheeky bastard for asking for it back at all

You was wrong to keep it in the first place, and he's wrong now to expect it all back at the drop of a hat. Pay him £50 a month, no more.

I don't see why you should have to give him any money now seeing as he insisted you keep it in the first place, especially as the money is now gone, and it'll get you into money troubles. He should have took his money back when it was offered to him in the first place, no way should he be asking for it back now, what a cheek!

Its him money, if you have spent it that is your problem.

You need to raise £500 and give it to him. Or come to some arrangement whereby you will give it him gradually.

Or you could keep it and lose a friend. Personally I wouldn't fall out over that. Far too easily sorted.

Sounds to me like he's bad with cash and was using you as a savings scheme, except when he's come to withdraw the bank was closed. I'm sure that isn't what he expected.

but would you give someone £100 for xmas then ask for it back a year later though?when you are given money as a gift you dont keep it in a bank account just in case they ask for it back.do you??!!??!! i understand that this is different though so personally i'd try to pay him back, £100 a month or something.i try to never get into situations where i owe people anything, i know its sad but it can ruin friendships.
