Can you tell me just how much fun they are.

I have been fucked around again and again with xe engines and am considering getting a turbo lump and whacking it in.

What do they handle like ?
Is it wheelspin all the way ?
What makes of cars can you embarrass ?

cheers

Great fun, but expensive.

1. Handle ok on coilovers with a good setup. i.e set up to handle, not just dropped as low as possible.

2.Wheelspin is bad, but if you can drive well enough you can have some control over it.

3. Depends how if standard or played with. My one running phase 2 and intercooler and 250bhp would easily take scoobys and over jap machinery with the same and a bit more power.

A mate's got one, he's had quite a bit of trouble with his although it's been behaving for a few months now, although he said it'll do 20mpg if he drives careful, when he boots it it can get down to about 14

they are good, but when i originally got mine back, i got 65 miles to a brand spanking new clutch before it warped the flywheel and made a big hole in my gearbox (see garage)
bought a 4 paddle clutch from sbd cost me close on 400 i think

oil pump went so just opted for a bottom end rebuild full steel cost me 3 grand

apart from that pretty reliable yeah

Think its more luck as to wether there reliable or not, i've put 11k miles on mine without any major probs tbh, gotta look at it that most LET's are high milage now, plus when they get put in a Nova / Corsa they don't exactly get an easy life !!
If just pottering about in it off boost then i can easily get 30+ mpg.

i got 30+mpg as well, light car

I had a few problems with mine, but nothing major. Turbo seals went was £80 to replace. Had an oil leak cos a return pipe worked loose (could happen on any car) boost hoses popped off but thats a turbo car trait. Nothing ever stopped it working tho.

I miss mine like crazy and have had visions of building anopther but i just cant decide how id do it.

My single biggest peice of advice is buy a NEW loom and NEW sensors so you dont have to keep replacing 15+year old sensors that wear out, as alltho not massively hard to fix was a constant source of faults and annoyance.

Mine is still going strong after being built 4years ago.

Great cars.

I had a major problem in mines. The timing belt slipped pulling away at traffic lights. 14 bent valves and 2 snapped, DOH!

Awesome fun beating sports cars, can see off an M3 in mine if its dry, wet weather is shite though.

Handling wise there will be much better cars out there, understeer really limits you putting the power down out of corners but to be honest Ive grown out of racing down country lanes, have more than enough fun on dual carridgeways.

Can get expensive though, a good F28 will cost you £300+ and will be 15 years old, im already on my second

Clutch will cost you £300 for something to handle over 300BHP

The k16/hybrid is expensive to rebuild and a standard turbo wont last long on big boost, Id get a garrett from america if I was doing it again because theyre cheaper to replace

CV joints are £40 ish each and they can get some hammer so keep spares in the garage.

Thats whats made mine more expensive to run than i would have expected but I dont regret it. I have still not been beaten on a motorway or dual carridgeway in 2 years

They are cheap IMO. Compared to ruinning something like a M3, subrau or the like they are dirt cheap.
But much more than your average 1.2 corsa.

Bargain cars IMO. For performacne for the ££

they only cost money when people dont rebuild/spend money on the engine before putting them in
as they tend to end up replacing everything during the period of owning the car/driving it!
i like mine alot but id have a mk3 astra let instead of a corsa after owning them both

I never rebuilt mine before i put it in. Ran ok in the previous car so if it aint broke, dont fix it!! Although its having a rebuild at the moment, after 4years of being in the car mind!

I find mine handles very well, got a quaife lsd in there, not too much wheelspin unless I drive like a twat, but thats the case in any car pretty much!

Scoobs, M3's etc. as already mentioned, got dicked on by a high power skyline a couple years ago though
