Just sold my S3 to free-up some cash so I can buy a house, im looking at a Saxo VTS as a runabout as theyre small, cheap and pretty nippy.
Anyone got any advice on common probs etc..
Would be looking at a PH2, 2000ish with about 50k on the clock.
Ive been told not to buy anything on a 51 or later due to the tax nearly doubling over the next few years
Thanks
Ash

Check for clunky gearboxes
Check to see if the power steering works fine
Have a really good look at the rear beams if its been lowered, can wear out

Powersteering loom near the bottom of the front panel can have a habit of catching fire so check its not damaged on the plug. This is why it sotops working then may work again.
Check the front balljoints as they have some stupid design on one of them. (droplink I think)

Sold mine recently for £1900
Mint car as long as you're on your own. Bit small with the family really so had to get rid. Was way too low and bumpy for my liking too. Fast tho.

check for cutting out when warm when at idle due icv being dirty,( normally due to an aftermarket airfilter) if its still on standard alarm the ultrasonics on these can go as and when they feel like it at a cost of 150 to fix. 2000 or older have single plug ecu which is easier to map and or change if you decide to tune. Ive had two both were great fun.

Would have to be standard if i decided to go for one.
Ive heard gearboxes can go on 106 GTi's so I take it the saxo is the same?
Gearbox
Power Steering
Idling
Alarm trouble
What are the like with regards to corrosion? Any common spots etc.. (like the rear wiper on Corsa B's etc..)
Brett, your looks mint mate, im not currently a family man so im alright there!
Thanks very much

Why not pal? Just because of the Saxo/Chav/Boyracer appeal??

The thing to remember is, it doesn't matter what goes wrong, it's dirt cheap to fix! Going from an S3 to a saxo will be peanuts to you, mate. Same as it was for me from a scoob to a saxo.

pedals are extremely annoying and they do feel a bit like a 1980's fiesta inside. Wiring is awfull. Bolts round off or snap far too easily.
however, they are fun and cheap.

There not saying it for the fun of it.
Complete junk. I would NEVER own a Saxo/106 or any other Pug/Cit of that era for that matter (unless its a diesel, then id 'maybe' consider it)
I worked at a car salvage yard/scrap yard/dismantlers for two years, and we got asked for the same things time and time again.
Gearboxes
Engines
Coilpacks
Arch Extensions (they fall off un-announced)
Axles <---- as young as 2003 needing swing arm bushes
ECU's
ICV's
ABS Sensors
Air bag light on pretty much as standard
Overall, just bad cars. IMO obviously

well your not going to get a decent one in a scrap yard are you... I'm speaking from my experience and my mate who has his going on 2 years i had mine a year, only thing that went was the coilpack, hes had a abs sensor.. for something that got the shit kicked out of it for 13k it was by far the best car ive owned, i keep considering getting another.
And im 6ft 3 and have size 11 feet and the peddles were fine

from your list
My gearbox was wank
engine was very tappy
the coilpack I suspect was the reason the engine would cough, run on 3 then cut out (hence me selling it)
arch extension fell off when I wen through a puddle
axel - fine
ecu - fine
icv - rev counter would bounce between 500 - 1500 rpm at sets of lights occasionally
didnt have ABS
air bag light was on from the day I bought it till the day I sold it

Correct, but Saxo owners go to scrap yards in the hope to replace the broken shite on their Saxo's. Thats the whole point in a scrap yard
We had customers coming in EVERY day wanting to know if any Saxos had came in with the afore mentioned parts on them.
Junk.

Personally I would get one as a cheap car.
Look on Saxo Sports club, a couple going for £1500 ish.
