ive been looking into getting one for the car, at first one to just see what its at, as i dont wanna be paying £45 to get a dyno run to check.
so, i was looking initially at the ones that are plug and play.. relativley..
o2sensor + gauge and its a go..
but then i came across the ones that you can program, so you can have it richer on throttle and leaner on cruising..
so my question is.. does anyone have any experience with this ?

You don't want to pay £45 for a dyno run, but you're willing to pay for an AFR gauge, lambda sensor, someone to weld the lambda boss in, a lambda controller if you use a wideband lambda, which means you need to buy a wideband lambda, which in it's self will cost more than the dyno run?

narrowband air fuel ratio guages use one wire which is connected to the signal wire of the existing o2 sensor and are a waste of time as they just show you the lambda sensor switching back and forth.
if you want an accurate useable air fuel ratio reading (the sort youd get at a rolling road) then you need a wideband sensor kit which are around £250 and upwards

Yep wideband is the only way to go mate...i've got a narrowband and it's usless

what i was thinking is that i dont have to keep going back to teh dyno and i can have it permanantly on so i can see how the car is running all the time.

Don't take this the wrong way, but it's not the kind of car which is going to go out of tune regularly. It's not a performance engine.

I'd just go to an MOT testing garage and have them stick their probe up my exhaust.

totally pointless. that only measures the a/f ratio under idle or zero load scenarios.

It measures the air/fuel mixture strength using an oxygen sensor in the exhaust system.
A ratio of 14.7:1 is stoich for petrol (no oxygen in exhaust, complete combustion has occurred).
If there is excess oxygen in the exhaust gas the engine is running lean (AFR above 14.7) and if there is excess unburnt hydrocarbons then the engine is running rich (AFR below 14.7).
