hey guys, my fans arnt coming on which is causing the water to boil up and bubble, which is then causing it to produce steam which comes out from under the bonnet. how do i get my fans working?

It will be the switch at the bottom of the radiator.
Either replace the switch or you could bridge the fan circuit so its running all the time.

Replaceing the switch will take longer & cost a coupe quid & is more a long term solution.
Creating a closed circuit across the fan is more a get you home solution. The fan will stay on as long as the ignition is running & your water wont boil.
If you've lost coolant mind & top back up with antifreeze or you could get fucked over when the winter arrives.

Turn the car on & watch to see if the fans come on. No coolent shouldnt be a problem just now, its not like its 100oC outside
Id go wih the fan switch chucked a wobbly. You could even stick a Voltmeter over the terminals & see if theres any reading from it, it should come on at a certain temperature when the Bi-metallic switch trips.

so the temperature doesnt 'raise that high' but the coolant is boiling and bubbling and steam is pouring from under the bonnet???

Oh possibly your header tank cap isnt holding pressure!! That would make it boil....much like a kettle does. Cooling system works under pressure!!

could the problem be air lock? maby if i bled the coolant system and refilled it?

is it using coolant? how long does it take from starting the car to the point the boiling starts?

sounds very much like head gasket failure. the bubbling is caused by exhaust/combustion gasses leaking from the cylinders to the cooling system.
any white smoke from the exhaust at all?

if the fans arnt working, would this cause the water to boil? aswell as having no coolant in the system?

water under pressure wont boil until around 115 degrees+ the fans would come on at around 97 degrees.
but you are saying that the temperature on the dash doesnt get too hot then the coolant isnt boiling as such, the bubbling could be caused by combustion gasses in the coolant system.

What pressure does the cooling system operate at?

depends on the ambinet temperature, coolant temperature, engine rpm's and many other factors.
