Had the pleasure of driving a 2.0TDi Passat about last night. My god did it go and 0-30 wasn't even measurable, but all the power comes in one big lump and then is gone. I found the car really hard to drive sensibly.
The new BMW 2.0 diesel engine however is much more progressive and refined, being nicer to drive.
Coming from a 12v, I feel my opinion is valid but I wasn't disappointed with this 'torque' people go on about.

I know diesels have small power bands, and I was expecting small power bands. But it was silly small 
Like I said, even though it's a diesel, the 120d is much more progressive and much more refined to drive.

It might also be the 6 speed gear box and short ratios etc.
I just wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be

Must have been a 170. The way it went round to the red line in 1st was quite scary and from 70mph to 80mph in 6th was nice.

Indeed, that is what I meant. You kind of floor it in 1st and it's time to change into 2nd, then 3rd. However driving sensibly, the turbo didn't kick in till 2krpm and it was deathly slow.
It just seemed like there wasn't any happy medium, it was either slow, or fast.

It wasn't mine and it wasn't the person who leant it to me either, was a company car but a hire company car.

deano, they are complety diffrent to drive, you can actully just not change as much, and just ue 3rd and 4th for just about every situation

I tried 3rd going around a corner, the revs were just over 1krpm and I felt like it was going to stop until the turbo decided to kick in.
I guess they take some getting used too and I've obviously touched a nerve but I think the 2.0d BM engine is nicer

Takes a while to get used to driving turbo diesel engines. I got very used to a 2.0 petrol and now i have a 1.9 TDI. Mid range on the open road, the TDI is better. I overtake in 5th gear with ease at just 2,000rpm

we have a few 2005 1.9 tdi 6 speeds at work (just before the new model) and i think they are brilliant to drive but i do agree with the power thing. You hit the throttle a little bit, turbo kicks in it feels rapid. Press the throttle a little more and the power has run out. I imagine a remap would sort this out.
But i do love the motorway cruising though. I think they are dedly tho because you just sit at 100 mph and its like doing 70 in the corsa. Its actually do less revs at 100 then what the corsa is at 70
The trip computer still reads over 40mpg aswell!

remap derv's, sooo much better
i like the 1.9 vx engines (which are fiats)
drove a remapped one, reved to the redline
there quick, not not as fun to drive as a petrol

Ive just been driving round villages in wales on a sunny sunday afternoon doing 15 in 3rd, as said 2nd 3rd and 4th are all you need, 1st is for moving from a stanstill only, if you are rolling at half of walking speed 2nd will pull you away,
I think the 2.0 TDI VAG engine is a beast, mate has one in an A3 its well nice
tut tut and what were you doing going from 70 - 80

totally disagree with you, the 2ltr engine is awesome, we have a 2ltr tdi jetta, motorway driving is amazingly easy, does 59-60mpg on a long run at 75-80mph power is spot on for what it is!
did you expct a 2ltr tdi passat (massive car for the power IMO) to be fast?
i remapped a 2ltr tdi the other day, made a hell of a difference!

They are very good on the motorway etc, I don't doubt that and the short time I was on the motorway, I couldn't fault it.
But getting to motorway speeds was just really odd, and all the power was just there, or not there, and not progressive enough for my liking.
May be I've driven a petrol, and fucking slow one at that for too long

Its a shame the Vaux Y20DTL/H's see so little benefit from a remap for the money, otherwise I would consider it as my first proper power mod

i prefer being in my mates bmw tdi 150bhp so more power than mine but his pulls all the way to the redline and its alot smoother than mine, mine is more of a lump of power need a remap tbh

Yes it dumps alot of torque low down the rev range but the 170 keeps pulling well all the way to the redline.
The 140 is similar with the torque delivery but then runs out of puff. Drove both before I bought which is why I went with the 170.
I haven't driven the new 120d which is meant to be a good engine undoubtedly but I drove the older less powerful one and it was flat and lifeless.
The only BMW I would consider to replace mine with is a 3 series Coupe with either the 20d or higher engine. 1 series is ugly as sin so not option no matter how good the engine!
There is a new common rail diesel fitted to all A3s, A4s now thats meant to be a lot more refined than the one I have.

I can't take somebody coming from a 12volt saying the power delivery isn't progressive enough.
I'm just about to go out in a 140 (140 not 150 as I had put originally), which i've driven many times, and my right foot manages to make the power delivery progressive enough.
I much prefer the delivery to my 2.0 na petrol which although has a larger rev range, does nothing before 4k so the power band isn't that much different to the diesel.

It's a jetta i'm basing the 2.0l experiences on, quite a good car in general imo.
