Well, i really like my astra gsi but i dont think i thought the economics through of having a 2.0 164bhp run around aswell as my impreza and id rather spend money on the impreza then running a runabout
My plan is to save a bit, tidy the gsi up and replace it with a diesel or some sort, probably at the start of next year - just getting ideas to start with really but iv got a couple of motors in mind
Golf tdi is probs my fave, not sure how much id spend though, they are expensive!

206 Hdi? bit girly? http://pistonheads.com/sales/624872.htm
306 d-turbo s? http://pistonheads.com/sales/658178.htm
Clio Dci? http://pistonheads.com/sales/624518.htm
what would you go for and why? would love an ace golf but theyre sooo costly

I Would get an izuzu engined astra. If you a going to spend a few k on a run around it defeats the object!

Jon get a 306, they're far the most value for money - and there's no point in paying through your nose if it's a runabout..

im running my gf's pug 206 1.4 HDi at the moment, i drive from milton keynes to st albans everday (i think its about 67 mile round trip a day) and fill up every 2 weeks (and reset the trip every time).
I managed to get 760 miles from the tank before i had to fill up last week! I usually get about 425 miles form the first half of the tank, but the second half of the tank seems to go abit quicker, though i dont run it all the way to the very last bit of the red!
I cruise to and from work usually between 50-70 (unless in town, but i only really pass through one and its quite clear in the mornings so no hanging around in traffic).
Its not the coolest car, maybe abit girly, but its saved me soooo much cash as i was putting £60 a week in my astra doing the same trip. The gf now doesnt fill up the astra for best part of almost 4 weeks now on her short journey to and from work!

For cheap as possible probably cant go wrong with a 306 TDI/HDI. Engines are meant to be reliable if nothing else

I had a Clio Dci 1.5 (80) and it was a great little car.
I've heard good things about the Pug 206 1.4 HDI also.
Golf GT TDIs hold their money to well imo. Look for a Passat TDI 130 and you can get those much cheaper!

I was informed the early 306 tdi's are pretty thirsty, its the later HDi's that are the one to go for.
I get about 500 miles to a tank in my 1.9 golf....I think thats decent considering I drive as the mood takes me....often quick!

I've bought a 106 GTi as a runaround while I move out and get myself settled as the S3's a bit of a money drain, £65-£85 week on fuel alone plus any repairs etc.
Its sound on fuel for me, about £40 gets me 400 miles but its fun

The 306 TD's aren't that bad. Mine (now the other half's) does about 42mpg driven carefully. You'd get more out of the HDi, and the engine's a bit smoother (but there's more to go wrong).

My Astra 2.0DTi has just done 320 miles to half the tank (something like 55l tank) that was going down the M1 and back, with luggage and flat pack furniture on the way back, between 70 and 100
If I drive it consideratly it would get 400 miles to half tank, im sure of it

Can't people just quote mpg rather than "a million miles to a tank"
Different fuel tanks have different capacities for gods sake
