Doing an engine swap to a lower mileage engine, and was enquiring about getting the mileage changed (digi clocks so can't just use a drill to wind it down!) and someone is saying it's illegal to change it as the mileage relates to the mileage on the vehicle, rather than the engine?

I see what they are saying but I'm not trying to be fraudelent in what I'm doing I'm just changing the mileage so suit the engine, after all, that's what people look for is it not? At present they'd see the mileage at 91k yet the engine is at 43k?

Another point he made which is actually a good one, is the mileage will be different come the next MOT. Surely I can just say I had the engine changed, but they might make a point about it being illegal as its meant to display mileage on the vehicle itself.

Can anybody share any pointers on this? Thanks

Just leave the clocks how they are.

I wouldn't bother, just when you sell the car let them know the mileage on the car is different to the one on the engine

only illegal if when you come to sell it don't declare it, ie trying to sell with lower milage than actually has

Yeah that's what I thought, which I wouldn't.

Might just leave it.

Id stick the lower mileage clocks in to keep an accurate mileage reading on that engine.

Leave it as it is. Keep pictures etc as proof of the milage on the engine.

Eh? I do care but I don't want it to be illegal and make it look dodgy. There is nothing dodgy about putting the engine in, but I wanted the mileage to match as that's what somebody is going to look at. I effectively can't prove I've changed the engine so I will just have to print the eBay advert showing the mileage. They have to just take my word for it that the mileage is what it's at.

Nova, I don't have the clocks and it doesn't make a difference. The data isn't stored within the clocks so would still display exactly the same.

Car mileage isn't just on the engine though, its how many miles that whole thing has covered.

I'd just leave it

When I bought my current Corsa, it was on 110k.

However, I had invoices from where the previous owner had the engine changed at Vauxhall at 79k, due to the cambelt snapping on the original.

The clocks on mine now read 136k, which is the mileage the shell has covered. However, the engine is newer, the suspension is newer, the brakes are newer, etc etc.

About the only things to cover the full 136k are the bodywork and interior, but I've left the clocks as they always have been, as I see absolutely no point in changing it.

Tbh, if I came to buy my car and saw the clocks had been changed to reflect the mileage on the engine, I would have been extremely dubious as to whether it had been illegally clocked, and maybe been clocked more than once.

As it was, with the invoice for the new engine etc, I was more than happy that everything was legit.

If your only reasons are to show the new owner that a new engine was fitted at a certain mileage, I'd personally just fit the engine, then take the car to my nearest MOT place and get a statement from then that the new engine (with new engine number) was fitted at that mileage. You then have that piece of paper stating these facts, even if it costs you £20.

Good plan that man!

Cambelt snapping is exactly the reason I'm doing the engine change too

Thanks for your help

Keep the clocks from the donor car if you have them.. I've got the clocks for my redtop engine because its half the mileage of my shell..

unless it's an msa logbooked rally car you cannot change the mileage.
