did a bit of work on the clio last night, people have always been saying the standard inlets are rubbish, very poor matching etc. so i took the liberty of finding a spare inlet and matching it, open it up to match the head etc...

to be honest i was impressed with the gain, but it matches what everyone else says.

i also added a new exhaust at the same time so i dont expect the gain to all be from the inlet!

as standard the car was:
166bhp 141lb ft

with matched inlet and cat back yozza sport system:
185bhp 156lb ft

***awaits rollers are out comments***

Cant argue with that. Was thier a big difference in the inlet size?

yeah, each runner was 46mm on mine (had an elusive RS inlet) now they are 50mm, but its the step that there was on it to the head that caused the main problems

Nice gain in torque.

There is a lot of scepticism towards this mod but this silences the critics

Most of that gain will have come from matching the inlet, you can tell by the shape of the graphs. Good result!

Them Billet cams are somewhat a bit of an ass raping tbh

That Henk guy seems to be spot on, went out in a cup with this map and H&R's and it just blew me away how quick it was down the lanes near Mark Fish

Moving away from Clios and back to small block XE's, do you think there is much gain to be had from doing the same thing to the inlet on the Corsa? I remember Lee Manning had his done and that car was fast as XE's with an inlet, set of cams and some headwork.

when we do ported heads on the small block xe we match the inlets, they arn't that far out to be honest, id be suprised if the gain was as significant. will to do before and after runs on one if someone supplied a car and spare inlet

Nice results

I am a bit confused though. You fitted an exhaust system as well and said some of the extra power will have come from that....

But when you fitted a new exhaust system to your car a few months ago, i asked how much extra power would it have gained from it, your reply was, none it an exhaust system.

nice power gains

correct me if im wrong but wasnt it a modified inlet that was fitted to the 182's to bring them up to 182bhp from the claimed 172bhp the 172s make?

cams and map sounds good aswell, go for that next

mk4 astra, it was the exhaust manifold and system that made the main difference between the 172 and the 182.

GSI 16v, i dont normally expect gains from an exhaust on its own, especially if there is a standard cat still in place

Smooth out any edges on the inlet ports of the head, enlarge the ports slightly, match the lip of the inlet manifold to the head.

Basically, its about getting a smooth un-interupted flow of air into the engine, and out again. Smoother the airflow, more air travels in faster and with less disturbence. More air + more fuel = more power.

Imagine an F1 car in a wind tunnel. Air flows over it very smoothly. Now stick a small windowscreen on the front, the airflow is interupted and doesn't flow as well.

Your removing the screen. Aiding the flow in.

Usually you would try to match the exhaust manifold as well to maintain as smooth an airflow in, and out the engine as possible.
