i dont think you can unlock the 3g model but you can get a sim adaptor that will let any sim run in it

You can't unlock but you can jailbreak. I did mine yesterday - sooooo easy.

Video Demo of just how easy it is http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qzM4YBNfKLE

There is a new firmware out by apple (version 2.2) which is now jailbreakable using the Quickpwn found Here. That is the main site, they are the only guys developing the tool.
If yours is jailbroken like mine, you can restore the firmware before you take it back to the shop.
To upgrade and jailbreak to the new version, simply backup your phone, upgrade, then download/run the quickpwn tool, then run a restore/resync to get all your data back.
Easy

I just done as i mentioned above in about 30 secs.
Once jailbroken you have a new apps program called cydia. Download as many sources as you can which gives you access to new apps.

100% worth doing guys, you wont look back i promise.
The apps are amazing, the themese are amazing, it really makes it worth while.
When you jailbreak it, you will get two new apps, Cydia and Installer, both identical to 'App Store' really.
Cydia is the better one.
You go into Cydia, and download sources, these sources are linked to all the 3rd party apps, the more sources you download the more apps will show up in Cydia.
For example, if CorsaSport made 50 apps, you would download a small Source from CorsaSport (only 1 source file), which will show you 50 new apps to download within cydia.
The must have apps are:
BiteSMS (click the little arrow when your in their and choose 'use your current carrier', this will give you forwarding, send to many etc
SwirlyMMS does exactly what it says on the tin. Search for the o2 WAP settings, you'll need to put them in, but it works fine and dandy.
Winterboard, this is used for themes, theres literally hundreds to download (the best are vivid, leopard UI, some vista ones).
Catagories, great if you have loads of apps/icons. You can create folders on your desktop, I previously had two folder called Appz and Games and cleaned up the desktop that way.
If anyone has any questions with anything, give me a shout, ive jailbroken a few times now.
