Anyone help me identify a star?
Basically, at around 5.20pm onwards, coming from the south, there's a massivly brighter star every day. It almost looks like an aircraft light but its not. Im guessing its actually a planet from our solar system but i've got no idea what. Its white, larger than any other star by quite a lot, it burns much brighter and seems to move accross the sky quicker also (weirdly going south to north).
Or could it be that space station I know people can see when sunset happens.
I don't get to see it after 6pm as it falls behined my house, but it moves much quicker than any other star you can see.
Any space buffs know what one it could be im looking at?

it will be a planet. it will appear to move quicker due to it being closer than any of the stars. haven't a clue what planet it will be though. if you identify it let me know and i'll get the telescope on it and try to get you some pics.

I'm afraid I can't give any insight into what it may be However, what is all this hooha about "Planet X" (Niburu?) and it apparently ending the world in 2012?

I know Mercury and Venus were both visible throughout December so Hamish is probably correct.

It doesn't look any better in binoculars. I was hoping to see some colouration to narrow down what planet it it.
I'll see if i can get a shot tonight on my phone to give you an idea of its direction and brightness. Its deffo either that space station, or a neaby planet.
Just interested to know whats around me. Sit outside every night having a smoke looking at all the stars and constellations, don't know any ot them by name, just like looking (Natural high baby )
Thing is if its a planet im sure you should be able to see a little colouration at least. Damn city lights don't help

we do this when we go fishing. if its a nice night we get all our bed chairs in a line and lay back looking at the sky with a joint and a few tins. we are usualy out in the country too so there is very little light polution.

we call it the boiling pot coz we're northern. my mate reckons there is a constallation that looks like a horse but i've never been able to make it out. he smokes green.....

I've looked at loads of web pages, and can see the different constellations, but i think i need someone ot sit there and actually point the buggers out.
Hopefully the clouds will let me get a shot tonight.

I only know the plough, orion, the north star and the seven sisters.

if we are correcting people; thats not exactly right. Ursa Major is made up of more bits than just the plough. there are about 20 stars in it in total. the plough is just 7 of them.

Well my house is west (F) and east facing.
If im in my back garden looking at the house, it is to the left (south) and heads accross my house left to right (so south to north).
I notice it as it the only real star i can see as I walk out my garage at 5.30pm into my garden, so its pretty noticable.
