I entered a maximum bid of £52 for a model car, but it says current bid is £38.50, so will the current bid not increase until someone enter a higher maximum bid than me?
If so then i should enter a maximum bid of like £200 for example for a model worth £60, then no one would get higher than my maximum bid.
Would this work or am i being silly

Yeah true, but the buyer could get a friend to keep bidding on it, or someone else who really wants it will keep bidding on it, and then you might end up paying £200 for it!

No, the system would automatically up the bids until you lost out at £200.
ie. price is £40, you bid up to £200 and current bid is yours at £45.
Then someone else bids £50, so the maximum will go to £55 still in your name.

The current bid will increase up to your maximum bid.
E.g. if someone bids £45 now it'll go up to £45.50 (i think it'd be 50p increments)
If someone bids over £52 then obviously they'll be the leading bidder.
Typed this as apk was replying, so what he said basically

Nope! I thought if i was to enter a maximum bid of £200 that for the current bid to increase someone would have to enter a higher maximum bid than me, therefore i would get it for a low price.
But i was wrong... Again!

Yeah, they'd have to put in more than £200.
Although if anyone else out there is mad enough to spend over £200 on it then let them have it

It happens all the time. If people get caught doing it then their bids get taken off and the account suspended.
Sometimes the seller will just make a second account. A guy who was in my class at college used to do it He sold stuff on there and had another account which he upped the bids with, until he went over their maximum, and then retracted his winning bid, so that he didn't buy his own item.

Thats how I bid, if I see an item worth £40 for example and the bids are at £23 then I'll bid ~£40 ad leave it at that. If Iget he item for £40 then thats fine and any lower is a bonus.

Yes....done this once for my boss only to atract buyers, it had 40 minutes to go, was worth a few hundred, i put 100 on as the first bidder and then others fought it out so i left them to it
Its very very naughty though....ebay remove your account if they find you doing it.

Let's be fair, most people do it from time to time. The system is slightly floored in the way that if someone bids, tand is the highest bidder, then bids a higher amount you can see that they have bid twice so clearly inserted another higher amount, they should really sort that out.
