Ok i have done loads of fab work (see my project thread) and the cage bar and rear floor sheet steel and various other bits have gone rusty, worse in some places but only surface rust.
Basically, i want to stop the surface rust coming up, but it needs to be friendly for when its re-sprayed professionally.
What can i put on it / paint it with to stop the rust coming through again and stop any risk of rust coming through the paint after its been professionaly re-sprayed?
Thanks, Dan

Right so that zinc 182 you can mix with thinners and spray on as a primer? I just want something that i can apply before it goes for professional prime and colour as i want 2pak primer and paint.

Ah right cool. Did you actually use the davids branded zinc 182? I think in a spray can will be my answer tbh!

If you cover it in zinc primer then the bodyshops going to want to get it all off before painting it which will cost you. Better off putting on a bit of etch primer which the bodyshop will be putting on anyway which will save them a job.

The zinc primer isnt good for spraying over really, but can easily be washed off with thinners before its profesionally painted. We use the zinc primer on the inside flanges of panels for when they are spot welded on, i.e a new quarter panel, spray it on the inside of the new panel, and the outside of the inner quarter.

Lol that leaves me back with no answer lol. If i just use normal grey primer in a rattle can, will the rust not come through again (even if i clean it all off before applying the primer?)

tbh though even if that zinc primer needs taking back again 1st so will the etch primer you put on.
not being harsh but your taking it to a bodyshop to be painted and would be fucked off if the job was shit, they would take back any bits i had primered and redo them to there standards so they know no rust will be coming back through

been racking my brains and i think its phosphoric acid you need to protect it
dilute it with water (how much you dilute it is up to you depending on how bad rust is and how much you want to treat it, i used 10 - 1 to keep in warranty regulations at work) and then just brush it over the metal you want to protect, the water will evaporate leaving a transparent creamy colour with a slight rainbow effect
leave to dry for couple hours then its ready to prime (or etch and prime depending on primer used)

etch primer doesnt prevent rust from reoccuring, just sprays on metal to provide a good key for adhesion for priming

The problem i face is this:
But do i clear all rust and use rust preventor before sending for re-spray or do i just leave it and let them sort it out?

let them sort it, they would/should etch prime it then 2k primer then colour.
if its a good body shop, let them sort it.
