I work full time mon-fri minimum of 37 hours per week, for a university so general office job, pay is good and its a good place to work.

But ive been thinking about looking for an evening job, preferably bar work somewhere local to me as its extra money and its also something to do of a few evenings as there not a lot to do in the week after work anyway.

Anyone else have a normal full time job but then does something else such as bar work as well?

Thing is most of the places want people with experience, but how do you get the experience if no one will give you a job lol!

I did it for a year, worked at the school 8-4.30 weekdays then did 9-6 at my previous place on a Saturday as a weekend supervisor.

Wasn't easy.

only the one job for me, wouldnt mind some extra cash but unless it was cash in hand it wouldnt really be worth it unless i worked silly hours as half would be taken in tax etc.

although i dont see it as a "job" i do get to paid incomes.

i work 37 hours a week (M-F) as Production Engineer and this is my primary job.

in my spare time i am a Air Cadet staff member and claim pay, upto 28 days per financial year. it isnt alot, but i dont do it for the money, currently the Sergeant pay rate is ~£55/day where a day must be a minimum of 8 hours. its a nice extra which i see it as "pocket money"

yes it takes up my spare time but it is voluntry and alot of what i partake in i choose to, i could do alot less if i chose to

The tax will rape you on the second job.

As Matt said, would only do it if it is cash in hand to make it worth while

i sometimes do foreigners in the evening or at weekends if i'm low on cash and it's an easy-ish job. i get better paid if i just work overtime at my day job though.

Tax doesn't rape you, if your earning in the 20% band now you'll just get taxed 20% on the second job, appearing as basic rate (BR)

So long as you earn below 36k I think it is you pay the nominal 20% income tax no matter how many jobs you have.

I was always under the impression you were taxed at the higher rate on your second job. Oops

Colin has it right.

Back last year when the 10% and 22% tax bands were in existance, I earnt into the 22% band at the school. At wyevale I earnt a little amount, but not enough to get in the 40% band.

So my main job earning were taxed at 0% (allowance), 10% and 22%

Wyevale was taxed at 22%.

10%'s up to the 1st 10k is it not!?

5400 or whatever non taxable

then up to 10k at 10%

then up 10k to 36 or whatever it is now at 20%

anything over is 40%

Soon to be 50% over 150k!?

No matter if you've 1 job or 31 jobs!?

I don't know the tax bands now but my understanding is they add up your earnings and then tax it as a total amount.

Garenteed to gt it wrong though, I got a hefty amount back last year!

Your 2nd job will be taxed 20% on all of it unless you creep over the 40k tax band.

I do 8-5 Mon-fri work in IT and 5-9 on friday and 8-5 on sundays in sainsburys.
Been doing this for the past 9 months now. I still go out almost every week.

I spend what i earn from my part time job and the F/T money I am saving for a deposit for a house - got 8k saved up since September

I would do more part time hours but my F/T job sometimes requires me to stay behind to upgrade servers etc luckily its never a friday!

I get bored sitting at home, so I'm not really bothered working.

If you have lots of free time, then I say go for it and find a P/T job
