absolute weapons if tuned, very hard to find a decent one that hasnt been thrashed. Check on some sites for things to look out for.

Fucking awsome cars. Watch the rear archs as they will rust and also the condition of the speedlines. The engines are all but the same as the 2.0 meganes so engine parts wont be a problem

Not worth the price they commend. Get a 1.8 16v instead, theres very little difference and you save 2k in the process.

I know, 172's are also crap, you won't be spending 3k on a 14 year old car though.

The 172's are falling apart so I can't even imagine how bad a williams would be.

the 1.8 Rsi is crap and also was a 1.8 8v engine with a pants gearbox.

The 1.8 16v is practically the same engine as the 2.0 16v from the willy ( F7R engine ).
You can actually swap the bottom ends in these blocks.

For the difference in price, i would strongly recommend getting yourself a valver ( 1.8 16V ) just due to the fact that there isnt a large amount of difference apart from price.
Plus you can source the williams parts and put them onto the valver and get similar performance from it.

Clio willie is only 150bhp......

Think i'd rather a 172, it would probably have less problems, everyone I know thats had a mk1 clio has had plenty grief.

usually when you get to the 100k mark you start to get problems ( unless it been looked after throughout its life ).
The 172's have quite alot of problems, if I was gonna get a 172 it would have to be the pase 2( i think ) clio with the trianglely lights if you get what i mean. I dont really like the look of the bug eye clios.

if you want a clio so much... get a little 1.2 or something like that and drop a redtop in it at least then you're not relying on the french to throw you back in your seat

Speak to Half Pint on here, he is the only person I would listen to IMO.

He had a 16v for a while and was always fixing things on it.

My mates are renault nuts, ones had about 5 clio 1.8 16v's, ones had 2 and another had a clio 16v then a williams.

The williams she had was no faster than a 1.8 16v and for the extra £2000 it commended it wasnt worth it. She later got rid of it for a 106 gti which was a much better car.

The 1.8 16v's are a good car for the money but build quality and reliability leave something for desire, the interior is terrible - as is the driving position.

For the price bracket, id much rather a corsa XE, 106 gti, saxo vtr, r5 turbo or 205 gti with an mi16.

3k buys you a ph2 172, which would be a better option but still a pants car.

Its not just a clio valver with a larger motor. The whole front end is different with a wider track. Its things like this that not many people realise which make it such a great drivers car.

You cant get away from the fact the interior is shit though

Clio Williams is the worst car i've ever owned, it broke and broke and broke some more!! and it was a low mileage fsh car. Utter crap imo

Tony (Halfpint) popped the circlip off the diff a couple of times but then again his car was driven within every inch of its life.

Nothing other than that iirc went wrong with it, he took the engine out to do the belts and that in its self was an easy job as everything was plug and play.

Tony was the sole reason I went to the French side, he let me have a go in it then showed me what it was capable of.

Like any car out there you have your monday cars and your friday cars. My Uncle has an E55 AMG and that is always going wrong....doesnt mean its a crap car....just his one is

As long as its maintained then its going to treat you well, John clearly you didnt like your Clio which is fair enough but whats the point being a misserble old git about it?

My advice to anyone is drive one and decide for yourself they can be Marmite but I love my 182 and today it just ticked over 60k miles which means in the last 18 months its covered 45k without any issues always started on the button and not even one rattle Its also seen track action and still hasnt let me down.

For those who dont see the appeal to driving a 13 year old Williams thats fair enough but the fact is its a depreciation free car that is sought after....surely there is a reason behind this? If driving dynamics and fun factor is on your agenda I would recommend one to anyone.

fad - finally somebody else who likes renaults like me on this forum

I suppose at the end of the day, it goes on what you like in a car. I find that driving position is fine, in actual fact i think its perfect. Some people obviously dont get on with the way its setup whereas some people do.
personally, test drive one and see what you think about it. Bearing in mind its going to be a fairly old car and in its time it would have been driven hard atleast once.

I'd go for one if I had the dough and the room to store it, but i'd go for a 1, not a 2, as they weigh a little less and are in my opinion a nicer shade of blue, plus the origin of the species has a certain ammount of cool about it.

I'd buy the best, obsessive one owner, pampered, heated garaged, prize winning, three figure mileage car that I could get my hands on. As they do command so much more cash than a 1.8, why not spend a bit more and be happy.

They are basically a really nice 16 Valve MK I with some of the right bits and another 200cc.

A production car that small and light, rolling out of the factory with a two litre engine stuffed under the bonnet as standard was quite something at the time and that's why i've fancied one for so long. I've just never enjoyed the price tag.

That's the problem with any level of exclusivity and association with motorsport I suppose.

Charming little cars though nonetheless.

had a few french cars now meganes,clios,205`s all of which spent more time in the garage and me on me pushbike at the cash machine wouldnt recommend one to anyone,dont get me wrong when the run good they have been the best cars ive had loved them but just 2unreliable

I remember when i first got my old 106 GTI and had a rolling race with one from about 20 to 100 and it was dead level all the way.So not slow by any means.I think they look nice too apart from the dodgy interior
