Hi. My mum's looking at getting a new VW soonish, she had a Golf in the past and it has been her favourite car! I pointed out that new Golf's are still very expensive compared to most hatches out there. It seems they start around £16k for the basic model, £14k or less with the scrapage scheme, which we might do...

I really like the new Polo, but there seems to be no scrapage scheme on them, or any deals! Does anyone know anything about them? I noticed they still do the old model of Polo's... starting at £8k or £6k with scrapage! Not bad... but they do look very basic, and kinda crap to me personally. I'd rather convince her into getting the new model.

I think ultimately she's looking at spending around £12k, anymore will need convincing shame Scirocco's and GTI's cost so much, I wouldn't mind chipping in to get one as I'll be going on the insurance too, but £19k+ right?

The polos are, imo, nice but not exactly 'desirable'. The 1.2 petrol is pitifully slow, and I doubt the 1.4 is much better. The diesel might be ok, but prices are still mental.

As for the Golf, I love my Mk5 TDI - easily the best car I've had. Feels really well built, comfortable, plenty of toys etc. I wouldn't mind a Mk6, but honestly the prices are mental.

The basic model will be something like a 80bhp 1.4 petrol which is SLOW and not have many 'features' other than autolights/auto-wipers which I think are standard on all models. For anything decent you're looking at 16-17k which, although I love my Golf, is too much.

I'd be looking at a second hand Mk5 if I were her. She'll get a car that is pretty much on par with the Mk6, but much better spec and a worthwhile engine.

might aswell go to another marque, can get much better cars with better equipment and engines for 12k if you go jap or even ford.

my work mate got a 1.8 09 reg focus zetec s for 11k, looks really nice aswell, near enough the same look as my st bar the bumpers.

She's not bothered at all about speed, she drives a 1.0 Corsa atm! infact the slower the better if it means a lower insurance group... I'm definitely recommending second hand tbh, she's thinking about it. She said she wants it in green, but you can't get new Golfs or Polos in any shade of green! Weird.

This will probably be the only brand new (or nearly brand new) car she gets now, so she's pretty adamant that she wants to keep it VW. Although I've recommended a newer Corsa, something jap or actually the C2 as I've heard it's a nice little car!? Unless I've been lied too lol.

Depends which way you look at it I suppose. Mk6 Golfs have a huge lead time at the moment if you want anything other than a cheap base model - looking at March 2010 delivery if you order now I understand. They seem to be so desirable people don't even notice their way off the mark price wise Hold their value well, certainly compared to something like an Astra.

Oh, and list prices are due to go up 3% shortly as well

I'd consider a brand new Astra/Focus/Civic as the price seems ok, but the Golf is way off the mark imo. Second hand all the way. And no, they don't do green

You'll get a nice jetta for 12k and because it's not got a golf badge you pay less of a premium.

Think that's a bit big for my mum, she prefer hatches really. Been looking on ye olde AT, and it seems Mk5 GTI are a fair price now, £10-12k for 2005/06 with 40k or less miles... tempted.

Mk4 R32's are weighing in the same price, but obviously older and more miles.

Even Mk5 R32's are appearing at £12k now, albeit with 70k+ miles. Just thinking of paying the extra insurance would be and getting on it myself as well if mum goes for that

Surely it won't cost anything extra for your mum to insure?

Apart from a GTI none of them will be group 17, and even so, a female old enough to have a driving son there should be little difference.

Have you got quotes?

No I need to get the idea through to her yet

Be interesting to see if there is a big difference or not, especially with me on the insurance. I'll hit confused.com later or something to get an idea.

Almost, apart from it's not a hatchback and mum don't want no stinky diesel (personally I think they're alright though)

What about Seat's and Audi's for £12-15k?

Octavia vRS is a hatchback.

You'll get a Leon in that price range.

You'll get a Seat no problem. Audi will be even more expensive than VW.

Well a petrol one then!!

The diesel is a cracking car though mate and the diesel thing isn't an issue IMO...it's only a type of fuel FFS! They don't stink

You'd get an equivelant petrol vRS for about 3k cheaper atm.

I'm looking but couldn't bring myself to buy the petrol.

I'm doing 50+ miles a day to work.

Over 3 years the money I saved buying the petrol would probably even out with the amount extra I had to spend on petrol but the diesel will be worth more in 3 years time and I like the diesels better.

They're not far off standard, the diesel remaps to 200ish and the petrol 240ish before more mods.
