Royail Mail is your best bet I think, they allways hire loads of people over the Christmas period and from what I remember it's great pay.

for the extra money and some places keep a couple o staff on afterwards too
i worked at argos 3 christmas' in a row then they offered me full time work

Doing the same job, same hours but different location the pay varies.
This Christmas job's, I applied for this also, some places it was £6.00 and others £8.50 an hour.
So not so great around here
