Back in 2006 I was living in a shared house whilst at uni. In July I went on a holiday for a week. On return my housemate and still good mate told me that he had borrowed my bike, left it outside his work unlocked and obviously it had been stolen. He felt pretty shitty about it having not asked about borrowing it and being stupid enough to leave it unlocked, but he gave me the money for it which was £380 which I accepted because my bike was my main form of transport that I used everyday and was a pretty decent bike. I reported it stolen and that was that.

Now fast forward to two weeks ago when I get a phone call from a different mate who is pretty certain he has seen my old bike in town inside a builders compound. For the next week I go past the site every morning to see if its there again, one morning it is so I phone the local police station and somebody comes down and goes and gets the bike. A couple of days later I go down the station with proof that it's my bike and now I've got it back, I've spent a bit of money replacing bits because it was in a state.

I'm not sure if you needed to know half of that but anyway, now I've got the bike back should I offer the money back to my mate? I'm back at uni now so not rolling in money and have since got another bike. I haven't told him yet , he's half way around the world travelling at the moment anyway.

What would you do?

Personally I wouldn't, I'd keep the money due to the I'm convenience it caused you and due to your mate taking it without permission.

Sell the bike andale a bit more money.

Give the bike to your mate as it's now his considering he paid you £380 for it.

I'd phone him and ask him what he wants you to do with it. He'll prob just tell you to sell it on and wire him the money.

If it was back in 2006 why would you even think about giving the money back now?

Did you buy a new bike at the time with the money he gave you?

If so I'd give him the one thats been found to do as he wishes. Your obviously not comfortable with keeping it and not telling him

Either give the bike to him or sell it and give him the money - they're the only options really.

Id give him the bike. you used the cash to buy a new bike which is what you needed, but you got the bike returned to you so the decent thing would be to give him the bike which he paid for.

Why, he's still his mate and he was decent enough to pay up nearly £400 after losing his bike in the first place.

He should just give his mate the bike.

The mates travelling so prob wont need a bike

Id sell the shittest one of the 2 & split the money from the sale. That way you have the best bike & some cash & your mate gets some cash back!!

Sell the stolen bike, and give him the money you make from it minus whatever it cost you to repair it and selling fee's

I would tell him, it will get back some how to him so not worth the hassle that way

Break the bike into pieces and post it bit by bit through his parents letterbox

It won't achieve much, but will confuse his parents while he's away travelling
