After being laid off in August having just served a 4 year apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering as a fitter with a company called Weir/ ClydePumps I've been finding it hard to get another job in my trained line of work. Every time I apply for a job (sometimes up to 5 or 6 jobs a day) up till this point I'm getting the same response - that there are more people applying with more experience. Basically I'm currently going for jobs along with another 50 or more people who have 5-10yrs more experience than me and it's pretty hard, so until I can get something a bit more permanent I'm looking at getting a job in an area where it's going to get me decent money until I can sort a job in the line of work I'm aiming for.

So what, in anyone's opinion, is the best/ highest paying job to get into where you don't need much training, if any at all? Cheers for any replies.

machine operators in factories normally make a good score. you'd be on shifts though which you may not want. our operators here get £11 per hour plus shift allowance which makes it up to £14 ish. not bad at all since they are mostly fucking clueless.

C2RL, I take it it's just setting and running that you're talking about? I've toyed with the idea of doing something nightshift but ideally it would be day work. Call centres were what I thought tbh, going to see what there is in the surrounding area I think.

Window cleaner, charge something like £1.50 per house or change the price depending on how many windows you do.

pretty much mate. there is a bit more to it depending on what stage of production we are at but it's basically following procedures and pressing buttons. you could teach a monkey to do most of it.

You'll need an SIA licence, you will find it hard getting one if you have a criminal record.
Good luck finding something

we make paper machine parts mate. i'm pretty sure the rates of pay we offer are fairly standard for factory work. i have a couple of mates that work for polyflor making floor coverings and they are on the same rate. similar job in that they just keep a machine running. if you get on at the right place then factory work is pretty good.

1_litre + bigdan, nice one lads I think I might look into that one. How long is the course?

C2RL, that sounds like the type of thing I could get into. Would the job title be machine setter?
