I went to pay cash and a cheque in at the bank at the weekend, filled out a paying in form with it altogether but realised you have to use 2 separate machines to do it, so I paid cash in with my card, then used the slip with the cheque (£27.41) unaltered, and someone hasnt checked it so my cash has been paid, so has my cheque, and my cash has gone in again......

Im assuming theres a fairly low likelihood of me keeping this BUT surely the cheque has had to go through a manual check by a person so they wont find out now.....

Withdrawing it wont stop them taking it back though will it, it just put me in my overdraft then I will end up paying for it At least if its there and they want it back it wont damage my finances more

What bank was this with, as a cheque doesnt usually clear this quick, funds usually available after few times, but cheques can still bounce up to 7 days later with some banks, so have time to find out

If you use paying in envelopes they normally up your ballance instantly by what ever you say you've paid in but its not your 'available ballance' until they confirm the funds.

thats pretty much correct, i did work experience in a bank when i was at school and every morning i was there i had to go through all the evelopes from the previous day and check that the cash/cheque was the correct amount that they had typed into machine, if not correct someone went onto the account on the computer and ammended the balance

They don't do that much anymore due to people lying and taking money out, never to retrun. I know most HSBC'S use a cash scanner that scans money before its added like a chnage machine does, hence need fo seperate machines.
Cheques were usualy processed "out the back" by a "podder"(as we caled it) they basically add checks to the system, then add fund to account, not if the "podder" is out, they will know about it, its just finding the mistake.

Thats it HSBC works same as Barclays

I once paid in £400 cash and a £1000 cheque at the counter.

Got my statement a few weeks later and my paid in amount was £400,000+, the silly bint had cocked up and added the three 000 to the end of the cash amount.

I never noticed until after the statement came though, so although I had it in there for about a week or so I never got to keep it

I would probably be honest and mention it to the bank as chances are you'll only be found out anyway. As much I'd like to keep it dont think I could
