So I took my car in for its MOT a couple of weeks back.

Failed on a few minor bits that I've sorted.

but they refused to test emissions due to black smoke. So I've changed the air filter, which was pretty gummed up, and given it an oil and filter change.

It's much much better on acceleration, but still smokes quite heavily if you get the revs up too high, or come off the throttle suddenly from high revs.

My question is, if it's still too smokey to get through the MOT, what do I check next?

N/a diesel. I'll put some redex through it with a tank of fuel today and see if that helps. Failing that, I'm thinking reset the fuel pump, and check the valves.

It gets a fairly good going over, always has long runs, never less than 30 miles. I've probably put nearly 4k miles on it in about 3 months.

EGR's worth a look though.

I suppose the fact I had to google what one was should have answered my question.

But no, I don't.

Buy one, and use it to check if your EGR is opening and closing.

I'll start with redex and give it some death, then fuel pump, then EGR, then I'll worry. I found my MOT cert, and it'll still ok for another month, so I've got a while to work it out.

Correct me if I'm wrong... But if you take a car in for an MOT with 1 month remaining, and it fails, it is then void?

Right, redex is in the tank now. So we'll see come MOT retest time!

And I believe if your car fails it's MOT it's still valid until the end of the original certificate. Unless it's a dangerous failure and they prohibit the car.

Hi guys, need some more ideas. I've gone through an entire bottle of redex in two tanks of fuel now. And I've given it some mega-death including 80mph in fourth.

It seems to be a little better after giving it death, but soon goes back to its normal smokey self.

It seems worst under heavy load, like up a hill in fourth, it'll steadily smoke then there will be a MASSIVE billow when I change up.

I've been advised to look at the rocker breather, tube that goes from the rocker cover to the inlet plenium. Possible oil in there?

I'm informed my engine doesn't have EGR, so it's not going to be that.

Keep those ideas coming peoples!
