lets say a lift cable and associated backups failed and a lift with a person in it plummeted 20 floors.

What would happen if you jumped off the lift floor the exact moment it crashed into the bottom of the shaft?

Because you would still be travelling at 80mph or so and the lift would have stopped?

i cant see the elevator staying in one piece, i would have thought the floor would have a nice meeting with the ceiling. What you say is plausable

Are lift ceilings not a framework with foam type sheeting?.
So theoretically you could pass through a gap in the frame.

I think because you would still be falling really fast within the lift you'd still end up a mess on the floor.

it would be the same effect as crashing your car into a wall at 80mph and at the last moment sliding your seat all the way back.

at worst your shoe would fall off imo

Depends how fast the lift was falling. If you in a lift normally and jump up you fall back to the lift floor. You dont hit the ceiling. Also you fall the same distance back to the lift floor, not the distance you jump + the distance the lift has moved in that time. hmmmm

Never seen that but it's fairly simple, if you're falling at 80mph, you jump which may knock 1-2 mph off that so you hit the bottom of the lift at 78 mph, it's gonna be fairly catastrophic

Mythbusters did this, showed that even if you jumped at the perfect time to the perfect height that you'd still die. That was from 8 floors, so from 20 you;d be dead.

Also, its impossible on modern lifts for them to drop like that, as have a ratchet type system in place.
