which way is quicker to empty a 2lt bottle of water?

tip it directly up causing emptying to briefly stop every few seconds while air passes back into the bottle

or

slowy tilt the bottle so that the maximum amount of water can exit without it stopping to 'suck air back in' so to speak.

answers on a postcard please

Why does it only work with glass? never heard that before, but then again never tried on plastic

its to do with the air up the straw to replace where the fluid was so would work on plastic too surely

It does suck it back in, it just does it more efficiently using the hole in the bottle for both purposes simultaneously.

My first thoughts are that tilt is better than tip, just because with tip you have the water which has to overcome inertia to move, then it moves, then the pressure decreases inside the bottle which causes the bottle to deform and also the water to become less inclined to flow, until the pressure overcomes the combination of gravity and the viscosity of the water and the water stops allowing air to enter, then once it has the whole process has to start again.

Just sounds a whole load easier to do it without any of that fuss.

Think about if you drew a graph of water flow over time. The tip graph would probably look comparable to an absolute sine wave of some sort, which due to the acceleration/deceleration of the water has a lower mean average than tilt which would be basically a straight line.

It only works if the bottle doesn't deform, which glass doesn't and which plastic might.

If the bottle deforms, there's no drop in pressure to suck on the straw.

You have to tip it fully over and swirl the water round, it comes out pretty fast then.
