I'm thinking of buying a second car to use for work etc to keep the miles of the vts. Thinking of getting a vec 2.2 sri diesel. only thing is my insurance want me to make a second policy and want to charge 1900 quid for it, No chance am I paying that. So what i thought is getting it insured and registered in my dads name and me driving it as im insured to drive any car, social domestic and commuting to and from work etc. now if i done that i'd be ok to drive it all the time wouldn't I with his permision of course. Either that or get me put on as a second driver? which would be the best idea?

Your dad has to own the car but yes.

Is there a reason you want to keep miles off a saxo?

yea it will be registered in his name.

well tbh mate, its not reliable enough for me and i work quite far away now. so if it broke down agen, which it will. i wont be able to get there, thats why i want a second car. I think it would be a good idea. plus i could get the saxo of the road for a month or so and sort some things out onit.

swap your insurance over to the diesel, keep the saxo off the road while you fix it, once fixed insure it ultra low miles and third party to keep costs down>?

cant asked about that as well it will still cost a lot. it would be cheaper just getting my dad to insure it and me using it or getting put on as second driver. ive only got 2ncb so having 2 polices is just going to be a killer.

And then do it properly when you can afford to.

I bought a van to keep the miles off my car so I've got 2 policies. You'll be able to get a multi car policy so might be worth looking into.

I have 3 vehicles in 3 different classes so can't have a multi vehicle policy, it's a con.

i cant get a multi car policy due to my corsa being the other car. with having 2 cars i use my vectra most week days for work, then i used the corsa every weekend and any evening i was going somewhere. put probably about the same miles on each in a week.

keep the miles off a VTS?!

A old budget hot hatch? Its not a cherished super car - it wont really make a difference. Just use it.

That makes sense though, that's one of the reasons I have my van, but a Vts is hardly a petrol muncher

I was under the impression that a named driver was only allowed to use the car that was deemed to be "on occasions"... 2/3 times per week?

Might be wrong with this but TBH your going to do it anyway.

when i was 17-18 i was a named driver on my ma's 1.3 cl beige b reg golf. i used it all the time. got pulled over many times. never heard that you can only use it once or twice a week? you are named on the policy, therefore covered to drive it to africa if you choose.

I don't understand how being a named driver means you're not allowed to drive it as much, if you're insured then you can drive it as much as you damn like, that's what you pay a premium for.

The way I do it is i registered my Metro to my Mum and she insures it on her own policy. It costs £90 because of age etc. I pay that every year. Then my Corsa is insured with all my no claims fully comp. on which I can drive any other car. Therefore both cars are legal and if I get pulled over, 'Im borrowing the car' and everything is legal.

2 cars is just stupid unless you keep the saxo completely off the road, sorn etc.. as you just double your costs. 2 lots of insurance, mot, tax, running costs, repairs.

Keeping miles off of a saxo? Brilliant.

Why does it have to be a Vectra 2.2 diesel? If it's a commute just get something smaller? Will get that insurance down.
