Having a discussion on puma forum, heres how it went

Someone posted saying that supermarket fuel killed his cat...

quote:
As above, Supermarket fuel is cheaper, although supposedly supplied by major petrol companies, but Supermarket fuel clogged up my Milltek catalytic converter, my theory is that the so called 'cleaning agents' are not added to supermarket fuel, standard petrol station unleaded fuel is a lot better, and if you find a petrol station near to a supermarket, the price will be about the same too.

My ECU has been updated, so i can use 99RON petrol if required, i used Shell Vpower to blow the crud out of the catalytic converter, but without having your ECU updated to run higher octane fuel, you are wasting your money by using it.

Vpower petrol is good, but so too is standard Shell unleaded, BP's so called 'Ultimate' unleaded, makes my Puma run down on power, until i fill up with Shell unleaded again.

I replied

quote:
sorry but iv never heard of fuel clogging up catalytic converters, what was your cat clogged up with exactly? also who told you it was because of supermarket fuel? if soot then your car is probably running too rich

His reply

quote:
Told this by Richard at Tremona, an excellent mechanic, and passionate Ford RS owner, who is the only man i trust implicitly to work on my Puma, and who asures me that he would not even use supermarket fuel in his petrol lawnmower either, converter clogged up by reside from supermarket fuel covering baffles, causing engine management light to come on every 100 miles or so, car ECU updated by Tremona, along with many others here too, so no running rich problems, quite the opposite, car runs very economically now.

Ran car to Devon and back a few times, visiting friends, 350ish mile round trip, using Shell Vpower petrol to clean the cat out, no engine light has appeared since.

My reply

quote:
Never heard of people EML's coming on from using supermarket fuel, or clogged cats etc.

Maybe he is correct, however always being the suspicious type, it would have not been unheard of to hear that stories of this nature might be generated to help sell items or services, such as remaps

however that is all merely reading between the lines

Im quite happy to be proven wrong but iv never heard of people cats getting clogged or eml's etc, and is seems strange how this guy at Tremona has seen it a lot, oh..and he happens to sell a remap that fixes it

yes, but that was just a dodgy batch of fuel, seemed to be only tesocs that was affected, not supermarket fuel in general

He sounds like a guy that doesnt really have any rudimentary engineering knowledge whatsoever and just spews off what he finds on google and whatever his mechanic says is the word of god.

I've used suprmarket fuel 99% of the time for nearly 4 years and have never had problems with any of my cars and they have run fine.

I dont see how it can clog up a CAT either. More so i cannot see how vpower would unclog/clear out a cat

If he has a garden worthy of a petrol lawn mower he must be pretty minted. Obviously chatting crap has helped him greatly to achieve such a big garden. I run an Japanese Imported car on Tesco petrol and not a single problem. Its the cheapest, so of course i'm going to go there.

It's a little known fact... that if you fill your car up with diesel ultimate (and your car is a petrol) you'll gain 20 bhp.

It's all to do with how cool the diesel fuel burns. Allows you to up the engine rpm to over 15,000 rpm.

It's myth all this supermarket fuel pish.

It all comes from the same refinery, (sp)

I used to work at the petrol refinery in Inverness and al the petrol stations from around here got filled up from there with the same fuel.

I have to speak up on this one but take it how you may....

I own a Renault Megane 1.5Dci and I used to live near a Tesco filling station which I used on a regular basis for full tanks of Diesel.

My engine kept going through EGR valves every 6 to 8 months. After the 4th time I asked the dealer to look into it further because it was taking the piss. Each time, the EGR valve was clogged black with soot which Renault central said was from using poor quality fuels.

Ever since, I have used nothing but BP Ultimate Diesel, and in nearly 18 months I havent had any issues whatsoever.

May be a coincidence but thought it was worth saying
