They must be costing us so much money, and they are a complete waste of time.
Over the last year, i've seen maybe 10% of them are accurate. They are either faulty, displaying speeds rediculous to the road conditions, saying there are accidents.........after the accidents, being left on long after an accident or delay has occured with restricted speeds for up to 2 hours after any incident.
Well what a waste of time they actually are.
Today there was a a tyre in the road in a queue of traffic, I saw 2 people hit it. 5 miles up the road and a sign is displayed saying debris in road. This has to be the 10th time i've seen this in a few months.
Again, today, a motorcyclist had been knocked off his bike on the M1 J8-9. The gantries didnt give any warning, until 4-5 miles after further up the motorway, all of a sudden cones appeared in the motorway without warning because the signs were wrong.
I'd love to know the figure spent on these utter time and space wasting items of road furniture.
Rant over.

They are a good idea but only if they are actually updated in real time, not like 3 hours after the incident has been and gone

Damn, that was going to be my comment
I like it when they tell me it's foggy, just incase I hadn't realised...

I'm surprised I've never seen one of those daft insurance claims you here about saying I was distracted by a fog warning on the gantry signs which I was struggling to read due to the fog and that's why I hit the stationary car in front

m42 is worse they are forever changing the speed, one minute its 60 then 40 then 50. Might as well just leave it a set speed imo.

Proven to work better than cameras. Never seen one break.
As for the motorway boards, with all the crap drivers, awful lane discipline, peope who can't indicate, and a whole load worse driving issues, really, are the signs that much bother??
Maybe its cos ours seem to work down here ??? And usually quite close to timescales. Although the Fog one makes me smile. I like the think biker one too.

There was a programme on about it a couple weeks ago. one of the things said was that if they receive any phonecall about debris being on the motorway they will put a limit on the gantries until it has been checked by a highways officer as they can't take the risk.
