They're made from Carbon Fibre, Epoxy, Structural Adhisive, Aluminium, Aluminium Honycomb, foam, balsa wood e.t.c... Bit different to covering your spark plug cover.

Carbon Fibre is upto 5 times stronger than steel for the same thickness or by reverse can be the same strength as steel for 1/5 (20%) of the weight. Unlike metals, weave patterns can be developed and used to produce strength in the correct direction.
it isn't particularly good in impact, hence why you see carbon explosions and shards when an F1 car crashes.

its lightweight and strong, i mean why wouldn't you take a photo of some and print it on sticky backed plastic then stick it to existing plastic trim to make it even heavier?
