picking up a car tomorrow with 160k+ miles on the clock (petrol), what would be the best way to drive it home? Except low revs / speed.

It's a 190 mile trip

Drive it all the way, unless YOU need to stop, as cars don't need breaks.

I know, I just thought giving it a rest now and again would allow the engine to...recuperate and hopefully not see if breaking down

Doyle?

Don't make me out to look like a retard, it was a simple question. I was wondering whether stopping now and again would make the engine less likely to fail.

simple question, dick.

You could check water/oil/tyre pressures before starting off though, that would be a good choice.

Would expect it to be under much load anyway uless you are ragging the tits off it.

If it has been looked after it will be fine.

my car has just turned 191,000miles and i still give it death

just keep an eye on things like water/oil temps, keep checking the rear view mirror for things falling off or plumes of smoke, allow plenty of braking distance so you don't have to brake in a harsh manner etc

Unless it's something very VERY special, why on Earth would you buy a car that you are fearing won't make it190 miles?

190 miles isn't really that far. I did 900 odd miles in a day once I don't get you're question though, are you worried about hurting the car by 'driving it so far'.

190 long distance miles is better for the car then 190 miles broken up into short trips

Yeah I wouldn't be phased by 190 miles, nothing in reality, certainly not a long distance as such.

do the whole trip in reverse gear, its usually the gear that has the least amount of mileage on it in a car

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys!
I'll do the basic checks before setting off and set off home doing low revs and speeds.
