I've been thinking about joinin the police force for a while now and due to the next intake not being till late next year, I thought about applying to become a Special Constable just to get an idea of what it would be that i'm signing up for.

I'm aware it's fully voluntary but i haven't got a problem with that.

Any on here? What type of Duties etc? and what should i expect?

I'm clued up from the website, just wondering if anyone can give me first hand experience?

Thanks

Thats the minimum. Most guys do at least one 8 hour shift per week.

I'm a special for Cheshire. Finished my training last December.

Its great, but you need to be a certain type of person to do it for free.

But if you are thinking about trying to become a regular Police Officer, then it does help your application if you are a Special.

I'm based in Risley outside Warrington. Cheshire Constabulary HQ is in Winsford.

Cheshire is split into 4 regions. So you can be based anywhere in Cheshire. You don't really get a choice though, although they put you somewhere within a decent distance from home. You can put in requests etc though.

Im a serving officer but speak to a lot of special constables etc daily! Its a great way to find out if you want to be regular, its not a job for everyone.

As ben said it looks great on an application form if youve put in the time. I know Herts police request a minimum of 16 hours a month so not really a lot, could do that in two 8 hour shifts.

Go for it. Experiences can never hurt!

What type of stuff do you normally do then ben? As i know on the site you do X, Y and Z but would be good to find out what you really do.

Yeah i didn't think it would be a good idea to wait possibly another year for the next intake as an officer to then not enjoy it etc.

Ben have you not ever thought about joining full time?

Viper what age did you join?

Tbh i've considered applying as a regular police officer but hardly any forces are recruiting much at the moment due to funding cuts.

Normal shifts are same as a regular officer tbh. For the first 2 years you are always out on patrol accompanied by either a regular (FT/paid officer) or an experienced Special. You are nearly always on foot patrol as a Special, maybe using vehicles to get to where you are on patrol etc. You can drive etc in specials but only after 2 yers and not emergency response/blue & twos.

Deal with following up calls/statement taking, usual public order offences on a friday/saturday night, any emergency responce that occurs on your patch, routine stop & search, involvement in assisting traffic with any vehicle stop & search hits ...like when they set up a enforcement area where they pull every 3rd car etc.....scene of crime protection, major events like football matches, festivals etc.
