You should have cleaned the surface thoroughly first yes, other than that I can't see why it wouldn't stick unless it's cheap vinyl. have you tried going over it with a heat gun?

vinyl really needs a gloss (flat and very smooth) surface to stick to.

Are your pillars textured?

I would also consider it VERY BASIC common sense that cleaning them first would be a brilliant idea

Heat the trim then try the vinyl on?

No apply the vinyl then go over it with the heatgun whislt attempting to stick it down with the other hand, don't put the heatgun too close or keep it on the same spot for very long as it will shrink or melt the vinyl.

The surface doesn't have to be dry, you can apply vinyl to a wet surface and then smooth it all out.

If the area is textured it wont stick very well, maybe not at all. Try with the heatgun though, it may just work.

Depends what the texture is like, I've had to lay vinyl on textured areas in the past and managed to heat shrink it over it. I think in this case it will be far too small though.

Surface must be free of dirt and grease, and apply with pressure. As said heat gun for edges that wont stay down. It could be that its cheap and nasty vinyl though. Im a vehicle wrapper and even we have trouble if the vinyl isnt fit for its purpose!
