right im just starting to sort out my astra gsi to get it ready to go up for sale, im seriously looking into a 5-6 year old m3 now all i really want to know is what they cost to service etc
petrol does not matter as i bike to work and mrs walks too so it will only be used to do shopping in and fun miles really...
insurance not an issue as ive checked
tyres no problem
potential problems are hit and miss as you may or may not get them............ people say turbo's on astra gsi's are crap and im on my origional and ive not exactly bin kind to it and its fine...................
so just want to know are there any hidden costs and services what am i likely to be hit with???
only reason im asking is there are urban myths about all cars i.e gsi turbo's which are'nt always true?
any help ppreciated by people who've actually owned one lol

Don't go to BMW to get serviced, use an indy or do it yourself with genuine parts, warrenty is done now so ohwell.
Depends what mileage, BMWs seem to want new bushes every 40k miles odd as they are a wear item.

Even so inspection 2 will be at least £700 mine was around £800 at an Indy.
Inspection 1 is around £400
Parts are silly money. Alternators are an issue on them mine went and from BMW cost £600 to supply and fit ( ten part Indy labour)
Lucky my mate is a tech and managed to scourge a gen part but not stamped for £200

No idea mate. The aparent problem is the tiny cheap part in the middle of the alternator. Iirc it was called transducer?!
Anyway whole thing needs to be changed

I skiped a lot of expenses with mine which is why I was happy to have experienced the car then sold on, having not lost much in depreciation without getting burned. I only replaced the battery in 18 months of ownership, rest was covered by warranty or garage. Think I done ok, if I was having another it would be a V8 one with BMW warranty.
Make sure it doesnt need:
Brakes,
Tyres,
Clutch,
Any SMG parts,
Rear subframe/boot floors intact,
Springs,
Any costly electrics needing repaired.

like i first said though blow a turbo on a gsi and ur taliking 500-100 including fitted for a new
one....... so the alternater problem if it was to occurr is no different to a gsi blowing turbo's..
ive looked on the net and there are companies offering major services for m3's including full valet pick up and drop off for like 500quid which aint bad really, again my gsi was over 200 quid and the m3 is a long way ahead..
i may not even need it servicing anyway lol ive got me other car and motorbike so the m3 would only do about 3-4k a year so first year id only need an intermittent service of oil, plugs etc
or canbody come up with somat decent for 10k or less as good as an m3 lol

Beware with servicing as anything that looks dodgy in a log book and nobody will want ot buy it afterwards. Im not saying go to bmw, but super cheap servicing would usually mean shit parts or corners cut.

From a performance aspect then yeah, for 10k you will easily be able to better an m3. But from every other angle the m3 will win hands done. Servicing for an impreza is just as expensive as the M!!

BMW Inspection II
This applies to all E46. Same as Inspection 1 with the addition of changing the air filter.
Undercarriage
Change oil and oil filter while engine is at operating temperature.
We recommend BMW High Performance 5W-30 Synthetic oil, p/n 07 51 0 017 866
Check transmission for leaks.
Check rear axle for leaks.
Half shafts: Check for leaks at flexible boots.
Visually check fuel tank, lines and connections for leaks.
Check condition, positioning, and mounting of exhaust system. Examine for leaks.
Check power steering system for leaks. Check p/s fluid level; add fluid if necessary.

Check parking brake actuation. Adjust if necessary.
Check all tire pressures (including spare - except M3, M5, Z8 and Alpina). Correct if necessary. Check condition of tires (outer surfaces [left/right]), tread wear and pattern; in case of uneven tread wear readjust wheel alignment if requested.*
Note:If requested rotate all four road wheels as instructed and rebalance.*
Inspect entire body according to terms of rust perforation limited warranty (must be performed at least every two years).
Engine Compartment
Read out diagnostic system.
Check engine cooling system/heater hose connections for leaks. Check coolant level and antifreeze protection level; add coolant if necessary.
Note: Coolant must be replaced every 4 years (time interval begins from vehicle's production date).
Check level of brake and clutch fluid in reservoir. Add fluid if required.
Replace brake fluid every 2 years (timing interval begins from vehicle's production date).*
Check windshield washer fluid level and antifreeze protection. Fill up and/or correct if necessary.
Check air conditioner operation.
Replace microfilter.
Note: reduce replacement interval in dusty operating conditions.
Reset Service Indicator.
Replace intake air cleaner element.
Note: Reduce replace interval in dusty operating conditions.
Body/Electrical Equipment
Check battery state-of-charge, and charge if required.*
Check lighting system, i.e., headlights, foglights, parking, back-up, license-plate, interior (including map reading lights), glove box, flashlight, illuminated make-up mirrors, luggage compartment lights.
Check instrument panel and dashboard illumination.
Check all warning/indicator lights, check control.
Check turn signals, hazard warning flashers, brake lights, horns, headlight dimmer/flasher switch.
Check wipers and washer system(s);wiper blades, washer jet positions.
Check condition and function of safety belts.
Recharge or replace batteries for remote controls in all vehicle master keys.
Check central locking/double lock.
Check operation of all latches.
Check heater/air conditioner blower fan, rear window defogger.
Check rear view mirrors.
Visually examine the SRS airbag units for torn covers, obvious damage or attachment of decals, decorations or accessories.
Activate automatic roll-over protection system (if equipped) via diagnostic link.
Note:First remove hardtop/lower top.
Final Inspection
Road test with check of brakes, suspension, steering, clutch/manual transmission or automatic transmission (except M3, M5, and Z8).

When I had mine they had the car overnight, something to do with setting tappets
But yeah pretty much a swindle, along with £100 an hour labour rates.
