was having a bit of fun toying with my mate in his fiesta last night. all was good and then i just cained it round a roundabout. as i turned off i saw an insane amoutn of smoke pouring out of the exhaust. i carried on going straight and it got so bad that i could barely see his headlights in the rvm. we pulled over and on idle it was quite bad still.
i then drove steadily for about 5 miles and when i stopped at the petrol station it wa fine? no smoke what so ever. it wasnt over heating at all so im a bit confused? anyone have any ideas?.

i have similar problem, although on a smaller scale, much smaller. Will drive fine and then start smoking for 10-20 seconds, then will be fine....

it will be an oil surge type of thing, when you go round a bend quickly all the oil in the sump moves to one side and some gets burnt, it will smoke till it all burns off
someone will give you a better explanation soon because I dont really know what Im on about

I noticed on my X16 when i stripped my GSI that the cam cover gasket was leaking, and oil had been leaking into the throttle body.

Could be a number of things mate to be honest. Keep an eye on your rear view mirror over the next couple of days while driving to see if it happens again

Unless it was blue it is unlikely to be oil.

Let the engine cool down and start it up if the smoke is white an its missfires then it signals head gasket.
This is the only way I can see that it would stop smoking.

I'd agree with Oil Surge - MattKs explanation is pretty much enough you need to know to get by
Had it myself in my old Cavalier when I took a roundabout waaaaay too quickly one day, massive cloud of smoke bellowing out as I cam off the roundabout, settled within a short distance and never had any other issues with it from then apart from in similar twatty driving incidents

pritty much every xe does this, it is oil surge, nothing to worry about really but if you really care you could do the breather mods etc, mine used to do this a lot

Boiling Water Steve. Not burning.
Steam is easily distinguised from Smoke too as it floats/hangs differently.
Besides, there is no mention of a white emission in the original post, on they fact something happened immediately after taking a roundabout at pace, which supports the Oil surge suggestions...

also when you first start it up its condensation which is water so if what hes getting now is the same but just more smoke again points to water, im quite aware water doesnt 'burn' i just used that for ease of terminology.
burning oil is blueish

No they aren't MEANT to do it, but it happens - XEs have a breather mod to help reduce/eliminate it

also baffled sumps are to stop the oil sliding to one side leaving the pickup pipe dry, starving the engine of oil, not stopping insane amounts of smoke lol
