well it's coming up to christmas and i'm thinking of asking (making) the missus get me one of these so i can practice using it on my shitter and gain some experience for using on future vehicles.
are there any decent ones as such? or are they basically all the same and it's mostly about the pads/polish/technique used?
any recommendations that aren't too much money will be appreciated.

Thats the most stupid advice. You need variable speeds from 800rpm to 2000 rpm.
Get a DA (DAS Pro is getting great reviews) as its pratically imposssible to brn through paint using them. A Rotary can be a bit daunting and risky to start with as the risk of strile through is higher. However if working with cars with notoriously hard paints like BMW and VAG's I'd get a Rotary and take my time to learn.
I would only say you will need a lot of patience and time on your hands to do a car. If I do one I often wont touch it again for 6 months

I'd get a DAS with a mencenza kit to start with which will have a cutting polish like 3.02 and a lighter final finish polish.

Also that Silverline is a Rotary i'd rather spend the extra on a Kestral SIM.
If going for a DA I reckon this will suit you best:

To work the polishes so they break down and not burn the paint running at constant high RPM

cheers fad. i take it the power finish bottle is polish, what final finish? that the wax?
can you apply wax with these also, or just by hand?

Its another milder polish often used to give a more finer finish should you have marring/trails from a harder compound.
You would often test a pannel with a lighter compound first and only step up to a harsher compound if the correction was not great.

this one is the same as the one on i4detailing but says Variable 6 Speed Dial: 2,500 to 6,500rpm
