Went to look at a car earlier. Basically the guy said its his mates car, he's been using it for the past few months while his mate works away and now his mate want to sell it.
The guy has all the paperwork there with the car, V5 is allready signed by the owner and just needs a date put next to it. Also has a signed letter that gives permission for his mate to sell it.

Iv said I want the car but am reluctant to pay cash as obviously it could be stolen. Only way I suppose I can garantee its not is to pay into the owners back account I suppose.

Any ideas or thoughts or should I just stay clear?

untill you said the signed letter i would have said either bought it to sell it on so has not sent the v5 off as he isnt keeping it, or hes telling the truth.

do one of them text/online checks on it?

Signature isn't worth much, could very easily be forged.

Could you not go to the address on the V5 and ask the owner there?

What are you doing with the GSi?

GSi will be going up for sale once I have a new car. Im not sure what the address was on it. It did seem genuine, he invited us in to his house ect. But then he may just be good at what he does. I cant really think of a way to go about it to make sure its legit.

You would need the real signature of the owner.

Is there any way of getting hold of the guy and perhaps seeing ID for him?

Not sure how else you would validate it unless you went to the address on the V5.

You also need to check the V5 document is not itself stolen - read this - http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/car-buyers-guide/cbg-dvla-warning-stolen-v5c-vehicle-registration-certificates.html

Be sure to let me know when the white car goes up for sale though

Ive bought and sold quite a few cars where the sellers name isnt whats on the V5.

Isnt an issue imo. He's maybe never just sent the V5 away in his name.Hasnt had the car long or dosnt want another owner on the V5.

Seems fine if he has the car and all the appropriate documents to back it up.

Infact, the Saxo i just bought, seller said it was his cousins car and he was selling it for her.Even though the V5 was in a guys name who's adresse was about 50miles away.Didnt see anything dodgy about it seeing as the car was for sale all over the internet under the guy i bought it from's name and number.

The guy seems happy for me to pay online straight to the owners bank account. I think thats good enough, at least then if it does come about as being sold without the owners permission I have abit more info with having his bank details on the transfer.

Any paperwork I should ask for when Im colecting the car? Obviously getting the new keepers section and a reciept with both the owners name and address and the guy selling its name and address.

that's how I sold my clio, actually even better than that, it was the dad of the guy that I was selling it to that came to look at then take it away, the guy himself had never seen it

The guy seems happy to go for an online transfer into the owners account. I think thats as safe as I can be buying a used car private.

New plan- the owner lives with his parents not far away so I asked to pick the car up from the address on the logbook and transfer the money online to his sister as we are both with barclays. Sound better?

HPI came back ok, had a plate transfer 3 months ago from JJ52GAV to the origional plate so look more likely as the owners name is gavin so looks like he may have taken it off to sell the car.
