Cold hard cash.

Failing that, bank transfer.

Cash is very risky on his side.
Good idea is to say £100 cash sent recorded dleivery (so he has your adress) and rest by bank transfer to its easier to be traced.
Bank transfers CAN be re-called same day

You could just ask for a cheque and wait for it to clear.

Tbf, a really safe method payment is a postal order! Probably the safest.

Surely if they pay by banks transfer/cheque and you let it clear they cannot then get it back anyway?

Bank transfer is easily the safest, as it real money (no fake notes) he has the money (no cheque bouncing) and he can't claim the money back.

Postal orders are a maximum of £250 with 10% charge capped at £10

Ive asked him about online banking I would prefer it paid straigt in, saves messing around. Just waiting for an answer, dont want to put him off

Cheques & bankers drafts can be forged and reversed after clearing. BACS has a clearing window of a few days and can be reversed.

CHAPS cannot be reversed after close of play on the day of transfer but it's costs to send that way and might be a sticking point on a 400 quid part.

Meet and hand over cash halfway would seem safest tbh.

Safest way is if he pays you £700 but he owes a friend £300. Get his friend to collect it and you give £300. Simple really!
