Got pulled over on 04/08/10 for plates not having british standard mark etc, told I would be getting a fine etc.
Finally today I've received a fixed penalty notice dated 11/10/10
So over three months after the offense and over a month since this letter was issued.
Do I have any grounds to tell them to GTF?

no. all this 10 working day stuff is bollocks. if they have issued you with a fixed penalty notice, then you will either have to contest it or accept it. date is irrelevant.

http://www.motorlawyers.co.uk/procedure/fixed_penalty_notice.htm

As with a Summons, the Fixed Penalty must be issued within 6 months of the offence.

In short, you haven't got a leg to stand on if you wanted to contest the FPN.

Did they spot that from a distance or did they pull you for something else?

My plates are blank apart from reg number. But i've got away with it for the last 6 years!

Never thought a copper would spot it! Even when I got pulled for speeding and let off, they never spotted it.

I thought you don't need the plate manufacturers' details on the bottom of the rear plate any more? You used to have to get the place you got it done and the post code but don't think you need it now.

retransfers.co.uk seems to back this up, note it doesn't say that there's any writing required underneath the lettering, plus you're allowed 3D writing as long as it's the standard font:

quote:

SUMMARY: What is required and permitted on UK road-legal number plates
Required:
•White front plate (to British Standard BS AU 145d)
•Yellow rear plate (to British Standard BS AU 145d)
•The registration number of the bearer vehicle in the mandatory font (black ‘Charles Wright 2001’)
•Spacing of characters and character groups in accordance with the measurements specified in the regulations. Variation is not permitted

Permitted but not required:

•3D variation of the mandatory ‘Charles Wright 2001’ font
•Coloured, non-reflective border
•National emblem: English St George Cross with “ENG” legend, Scottish St Andrew Cross with “SCO” legend, Welsh Dragon with “WALES” and “CYMRU” legend, British Union Flag with “GB” legend) or Euro Stars symbol with “GB” legend.

No additions or variations are permitted. Common illegal variations are:

•Fancy or decorative typefaces
•Bolts placed in such a way as to alter the appearance of characters
•Adjusted spacing between characters or character groups
•Altered characters
•Additional logos or symbols, such as sporting emblems and religious symbols.

Stick a photo of your plate up if you have one mate, I think you could contest this.

I missed the fact they were smoked, that'll be why he's got a fine.

Said plate, I know it's technically illegal due to it not having a white background, just seeing if there was any grounds on the time scale but it seems there's not!

So its a grey plate with 3d lettering without the (legally required) markings.

does the offence date say 11/10/10? even though you got pulled on 4/8/10? Is that what you mean? If so the offence date is wrong and you can tell them to do one. Problem with this country people just 'roll over' and put up with it
