Road Tax doesn't pay for road maintenance, thats council tax steve. Road tax goes to the Exchequer, same place as income tax and fuel duty.

I hate tax's in general.
There are short term ways to get around it, if everyone was to buy a road tax exempt electric car, the government/oil companies would start a riot and the cost of Electricity would go through the roof. Or they'd bring in Pay Per Mile schemes. We still wouldn't be better off.
And I pay enough bloody council tax each year to expect the state of the roads in the area I live to be maintained to an acceptable standard where I don't worry about hitting a pot hole that could damage my car (which I also paid tax to buy and pay tax to own)

that's why in Malta we have a hug ammount of classic cars! Road tax on them is ridiculous... I pay €70 for the Cortina and the Bantam together and that's including TPFT insurance!
